The Arrival was a good movie. I'm a realist, not a purist. I like what works. If letters work better in some cases and pictograms in others, I'm all for using both. The point is effective communication, not how it's delivered. Hopefully, all parties are pushing for the most efficient and effective communication means possible.

You can't sound it out on phonemes, like you can with phonics.
It's a symbol. Nothing to sound out. You'd simply translate it into your own language as you would do for every symbol on the examples.
Consider the crew of the airliner and the seatbelt signs. Passengers don't have to speak the same language or phonetically spell out what the seatbelt sign means.
