Tennessee legislators tell women to kiss privacy good-bye

Women in TN must want to be considered indentured servants. How could any woman worth her salt elect representatives who would invade her personal life this way?

"A new bill moving through the Tennessee House of Representatives would require the state to publish the names of each doctor who performs an abortion and detailed statistics about the woman having the procedure, which opponents worry will spur anti-abortion violence in the state.

The Life Defense Act of 2012, sponsored by state Rep. Matthew Hill (R-Jonesboro), mandates that the Tennessee Department of Health make detailed demographic information about every woman who has an abortion available to the public, including her age, race, county, marital status, education level, number of children, the location of the procedure and how many times she has been pregnant. Each report would also have to include the name of the doctor who performed the procedure.

Several health organizations, including the Tennessee Medical Association and Planned Parenthood, are concerned that the bill will make doctors and women vulnerable to attacks, especially considering the murder of Dr. George Tiller, a Kansas abortion provider, by an anti-abortion activist in 2009.

Rep. Gary Odom (D-Nashville) called the bill "very dangerous," and said the Republicans who voted it out of a House subcommittee offered "no explanation as to why this was something that needed to be done."

"It puts a target on women's and physicians' backs," he told HuffPost. "I think it's a very dangerous piece of legislation and serves no purpose I can tell other than trying to intimidate women and physicians."

Hill, the bill's sponsor, did not respond to a request for comment. Nor did Tennessee Right To Life, the anti-abortion group that first suggested the bill to conservative state lawmakers. But at a subcommittee hearing on the bill earlier this month, Hill said, "I think it's fair for folks on both sides to see how prevalent abortion is in our counties and in our communities."

The House Health and Human Resources Committee is expected to vote on the bill Wednesday, and Odom said he expects it to pass in the GOP-dominated House. It will then move to the state Senate, where Republicans are also in the majority."

What a fucking moron. How in the hell can he justify this information being released? Obviously I am against abortion, but as long as it is legal, that information must remain private. With the info above you could easily identify the women. Which is beyond absurd.

thread fail.....this is printing demographic information, not the woman's identity......

In smaller counties it is the same as identifying the woman. While it would be harder in larger cities, it would still be possible. There are too many details provided.

If I stated an abortion was done on woman 'x' who is 29, white, Shelby County, married, two kids, high school graduate, four times.

Shelby County is the most populace in Tennessee. It has about 900k people. Say statistically half are women.

Now we are down to 450k. The county is about 48% black, 47% white. So now we cut it in half again.

We are down to 225k people. keep going for age, marital status, number of kids, etc... and you are going to narrow down pretty quickly.

I love what a female legislature in Ohio did. She promulgated a bill bill for mens health that has these kinds of asinie requirements aimed at men before they can get a viagra perscription. Put the shoe on the other foot! LOL

It was hillarous, all these Republican men who came out and said "Oh well that's different, it's not protecting life".....last I heard it takes two to tango! We must protect the seed! LOL

what bullshit.....I would have expected people with the ability to figure out how to come here and post would know what 'demographics' meant.......

when your phone company sells information that says 7% of their customers are white males who have not yet purchased a home and make ten calls a month to places selling take out food, do you think that means people can track what Superfreak likes for supper?......

So please explain to me for what possible constructive reason, other than to publicly humiliate women, would this information be of any public use?

 "White males who have not yet purchased a home" can cover white males from birth to death. It can include your infant son and your centenarian grandfather. Certainly a bigger demographic than women of childbearing age who fit into this group: age, race, county, marital status, education level, number of children, the location of the procedure and how many times she has been pregnant.

your kidding, right?.....the CDC has been publishing data about age, race, county, marital status, education level, number of children, the location of the procedure and number of pregnancies for decades

Variables Recorded

Each year, CDC's Division of Reproductive Health sends suggested templates to central health agencies for them to compile aggregate abortion numbers according to the age of the woman having an abortion, the estimated gestational age at the time of the procedure, race (white, black, or other), ethnicity (Hispanic or non-Hispanic), type of procedure performed (e.g., curettage or medical), marital status, number of previous live births, number of previous abortions, and state of residence. Cross-tabulation also is requested by gestational age at the time of the procedure (for age, race, ethnicity, and type of procedure), age (for race and ethnicity), and age and race or ethnicity (for marital status).

obviously......I think the problem here is you idiots either believe or are pretending that identifying information is actually going to be made public.....I would like to think you aren't that stupid, but then I would have to believe you're all completely dishonest......these are statistics, people!
