AUSTIN, TX—Following state senator Wendy Davis’ successful filibuster of sweeping abortion restrictions last night, disappointed Texans told reporters they are looking forward to tonight’s scheduled execution of convicted murderer Kimberly McCarthy to cheer them back up. “I was completely devastated after learning that abortion providers throughout the state would remain open, but thankfully, there’s nothing better to lift up our spirits than an old-fashioned execution,” said Fort Worth anti-abortion activist Caroline Hinton, who added that the impending lethal injection of McCarthy was “more than enough” to put a smile back on her face. “And as soon as I remembered that the state of Texas is preparing to take a woman’s life this evening by strapping her onto a gurney and shooting a cocktail of deadly chemicals into her arteries, I just perked right up and put those failed abortion restrictions out of my mind. And it’s our 500th execution, too, so it’s going to be a real celebration! I guess this week won’t turn out all bad after all.” At press time, Hinton reported feeling “even better” after learning that Governor Rick Perry has called a special session to reintroduce the anti-abortion legislation and that political analysts say it will likely pass.

Congratulation Texas on reaching #500. Keep up the good work.

While I"m not proponent of the death penalty I'm not overly simpathetic with tonights condemned.
We are the only western industrialized nation that kills people for committing crimes. We have freed 142 since the reintroduction of the death penalty. Those people were mostly freed due to DNA. Texas has undoubtedly executed an innocent man for the murder of his children. Fire scientists are positive the fire was not arson and every time the Texas commission got ready to verify that they believe an innocent man was executed Perry replaced the members. The system is racist. You are more likely to be executed if your victim was white and more likely to be executed if you are black. It costs millions more to execute someone than it does to keep them in prison for the rest of their lives. The system is irrevocably broken. We should tinker no more with the machinery of death.

an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position. To "attack a straw man" is to create the illusion of having refuted a proposition by replacing it with a superficially similar yet unequivalent proposition without ever having actually refuted the original position.

Evil exists, and there are some people that need killing.

Absolutely, and I posted on my facebook page: "Lowest lifeform in Texas, attempts to add insult to averted injury."

Whilst agreeing with you about the system, can you explain how executing someone is more expensive that incarceration?

Our system permits infinite appeals for capital sentences. The presence of separate death row facilities also ups the cost of housing expenses. When you receive a life sentence, you only get one appeal, and then that's it until your first parole board 20 years later.
