NC farmer adjusts to challenges after USDA cuts that impacts food banks, schools: 'In disbelief'

Fourth-generation farmer Patrick Brown is one of many farmers affected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) cuts. The federal government has ended two programs that provided food to schools and food banks by buying it from local farmers.

"The way this may impact my farm season is getting crops in the ground later. We already have to deal with Mother Nature so that's going to be unpredictable," said Brown. "It's not positive. Moreso, what are we going to do now? Just in disbelief."

West Virginia farmers face financial uncertainty as $1 billion program ends

CHARLESTON, W.Va, (WCHS) — The Trump Administration has ended a $1 billion program which allowed food banks and schools to purchase foods from local farms, causing some uncertainty among farmers.

"What are we to do? We have all this massive debt from expanding in anticipation of all these sales that are not going to happen," Jennifer Gilkerson, owner of Sunset Berry farm, said.

Farmers nationwide are in a tough spot, not knowing if they will have the funding to continue.

"It's heartbreaking to see this happening," she said.
