The Black National Anthem

Owens is a former NFL player.

Let’s see a raise of hands—who knew there was a black national anthem? Me neither. But they’re going to play it on opening day in every NFL game. That is, if they don’t find a reason to call it off. Will probably depend on what Trump’s poll numbers are doing in August.

On the one hand I don’t know why I should care about it way or the other since they don’t show the National Anthem on TV anyway. And it’s just a song [hardly anyone will know the words to] so it’s like whatever.

But then I think of the messaging. Black National anthem. Doesn’t that imply black nationalism? There is no white national anthem—it’s just the National Anthem. Everyone sings it because we are One Nation Under God. THAT IS WHY WE SING IT.

Isn’t that kind of like...oh, what word am I looking for...divisive, that’s it. It’s divisive on its face.

I don’t want to hear another word about how Trump is dividing the country.

Black nationalism = good, white nationalism = nazis :palm:

You must have been drawing the line your whole life then.

Conservatives always seem to care much more about symbolic things - anthems, statues - than in actual reality and what makes a difference in people's lives. It's like they'd prefer to enjoy the illusion of unity, instead of seeing it actually happen.

The actual reality is blacks dominate the NFL lol.

Where and when have blacks ever been ‘less oppressed’ than they are now, here, in this country? The politically incorrect truth is that 90% of the problems the black community face are self-inflicted. But we aren’t allowed to talk about that.

But maybe another symbolic gesture like having a segregated anthem will fix things.

Man, if that doesn't show how big the disconnect is, nothing will.

You're allowed to talk about anything you want to. It's always revelatory.

It’s not the moment, I’m fine with giving black folks all the moments they want and they deserve it.

It’s the National before anthem. Mine line gets drawn at dividing the nation. Where’s yours or do you even have one?

It's only divided because you are a thin skinned whiny baby. You own the divisiveness. It costs you nothing. When it was first written, it was called the black national hymn. Are you offended when the Battle Hymn of the Republic is sung? Get over yourself.

I know where you’re going with that lol.

I meant players.

And what does that tell us about how equal blacks really are in America? When they can dominate the player ranks - but need a rule to even get interviews at the coaching level? Never mind management & ownership.

Thanks for that example.

Ok, it’s a hymn.

That’s better. Hymns are religious songs or poems. Are they allowed to have God in it?

Yes.

Robert Turner said the overrepresentation of African Americans in the NFL is troublesome. According to Turner's book and independent statistics, 70 percent of the league's players are African-American, but only 6 percent of the population in the country.Apr 18, 2019

It’s only a question of money to break into the owners ranks. Even racism isn’t a barrier to the almighty dollar. And yes, there aren’t enough blacks in management and coaches but it’s not out of step with society [blacks are a minority] so much as the NFL—with is disproportionate number of black players.

Steelers have a black coach; Dungy was a head coach and I probably forgot some.

But the NFL is a pretty *liberal* outfit, as a whole. They wouldn’t be throwing a symbolic bone with this black anthem/hymn, would they?

Liberals wouldn’t do that, would they?

Frank......You are a left leaning individual yet you choose an avatar of a building that is depicted in your own avatar as leaning RIGHT. And YOU of all people have the balls to call someone else dumb??? :whoa:

I've never called you dumb.

I may have called you stupid...which you are, but not dumb.

Anyway, the building leans...neither left nor right...it just leans. Only a fucking moron would think it leans left or right...no matter the position of the photographer who took the picture.

It has been in the family for years (over 800 of 'em)...and was started on August 9, 1173. (My birthday happens to be August 9th.)

Anyone who would use that ugly mother-fucker you use as an avatar should not even be commenting on avatars. (Is that you?)

Give it a try...don't "doubt"....
If you've got proof, let's see it....

Like I said...

...if you cannot see it, it is because you are blind or a moron.

You can name 2 black HC's. One who retired over a decade ago. In a league where most of the players are black.

And you think the proportions are not "out of step?"

There are more black coaches than you named, but not that many. And forget about GM's. As for ownership, it really shows how far we have to go.

Really, worrying about anthems & statues are 1st world problems. Try being shut out of positions of management & power for centuries.

Sure, why not? I don't believe, but I'm certainly not bothered by others believing. I think once people look into the history of this song, which is very much a gospel song, this will be less controversial. It's called 'Lift Every Voice and Sing', a poem written in 1919 and put to music.

There have been 17 black head coaches in the NFL. Most of them fairly recent I think. Once you start hearing the names, you go 'oh yeah, forgot about him'. Denny Green, Lovey Smith, Art Shell, Herm Edwards...... actually a longer list than I had thought. Still a long way to go.

Well, again, the NFL is hardly a bastion of Trump support lol. It’s not like you can smell the Trump support or anything.

Rooney’s, maybe. Like practically all institutions, the NFL is dominated by liberals. And this is becoming a familiar theme: most places where blacks struggle worst are run by liberal Democrats. George Kirby was a victim of ‘systemic racism’ in a place run by Democrats for years and years if not decades. The blood soaked war zone formerly known as Chicago—run by Democrats.

On and on it goes.

Don’t blacks understand that liberal policies are working wonderfully for them? And here the NFL is letting them sing the Black National religious song—for what, an act of penance for locking blacks out of management and coaching for so long. Maybe they should look less for oppression than who they keep voting for.

In contrast, Trump offers them, nothing. But jobs and opportunity.

It's just a reflection of society. You could go to pretty much any industry, in any red or blue area.

It sounds silly to try to make it partisan or a "Democrat thing." It's a disconnect from reality.
