Shoehorning in a birth that took place sometime in July (by best estimates) doesn't suddenly give the holiday Christian roots. It just means Christians needed to force information into what already existed.

Well, Easter is and always will be the most sacred of holidays in Christianity. That's why there are four days associated with celebrating it, on top of the fact that it follows 40 days of Lent. There are plenty of reasons why many Christians have chosen to not celebrate it over the centuries. As a Catholic, we like our feast days, so it was only natural that we would come to celebrate Christmas (pretty much as soon as Christianity was legal in the Empire).
