The immigration issue is a pretty easy one for me since I feel sorry for the immigrants and am, despite my reputation as being pretty radical, an unusually pro-business liberal. I think we should just harness the markets to make life easier for the underclass.
I don't think that cutting off immigration is the solution to things. And I think that if, in the future, we want to compete with nations like China and India, we are going to need a much larger population. Immigration is the only reasonable way to accomplish that. Huge levels of immigration are the only way to insure America doesn't become the Britian of the 21st century. I support large levels of immigration because I love my country too much to do otherwise.
I was being sarcastic.
Do you people just fucking NOT comprehend the DIFFERENCE between an "immigrant" and someone who sneaks across our border in the middle of the night and enters our country illegally? Talk about "redefining" words, we need to "redefine" illegal immigrant, because some of you apparently get it confused with IMMIGRANT!
At present, we have a major problem with people coming across the Mexican border, without going through the process of coming to America legally. THAT is our problem! THAT is what people are opposed to! --NOT LEGAL IMMIGRATION! Can you try and understand that one little thing?
We do have a set limit on the number of people who can migrate into the US per year, we have to! If we didn't, the entire world would come here, because we're a pretty fucking good country to live in! But now, a few more years of Obama, and we can probably lift all restrictions on that number, because NO ONE will want to come to our Socialist shit hole!
For now, we need to focus on doing something to stop the flood of people pouring across our borders daily. Cities along the border are literally going bankrupt, because there are the taxpaying citizens, and the FLOOD OF ILLEGALS, who are paying nothing into the system to help fund it. Think about it like your home... You buy your own groceries and electricity and such, but your back door is broken... off the hinges.. and all of these strangers keep coming in your home... each day, you come home from work, and there are a few more new faces! They are using your shit, eating your food, and having a great time in your house... How long do you suppose you can afford to support them?
I actually think Krugman makes a good point about the GOP and Hispanics. From a political perspective Republicans can win without the black vote. But the Hispanic vote is growing and they cannot afford to give that away. Measures like this do not help the party in that regard.
Krugman (not surprisingly) is way way off base regarding tea party folk. The tea party started around spending. He's trying to describe them here as if they are social conservatives and the one's who caused this law to be passed. What a bunch of crap. I know he knows that but his partisanship won't allow him to be honest.
Republicans, on the other hand, either love immigration or hate it. The business-friendly wing of the party likes inexpensive workers (and would really enjoy a huge guest-worker program that would both provide such workers and ensure that they can neither vote nor, in practice, unionize). But the cultural/nativist/tribal conservatives hate having these alien-looking, alien-sounding people on American soil.
Your right Dixie. I dont see a difference. All I see are fellow human beings in desperate situations looking for a better life. That is the definition of the American dream. To stop them from doing that is most Un-American.
Id reather be a bleeding heart then some one with out a soul.
