* Bladen County North Carolina settled a wrongful death lawsuit for $325,000 last month to the family of a man who died after being tasered up to 38 times, at least according to the chips on the tasers used during the encounter. An autopsy suggested he died from a combination of heart disease and cocaine overdose which were aggravated by the taser. Dashcam video indicated that he was unable to comply with demands to put his hands behind his back… because he had been stunned by the taser. So officers apparently kept tasering him.
* The Louisville Kentucky police department is the subject of a lawsuit filed by the former owners of a strip club alleging police conducted a campaign of illegal raids and intimidation designed to drive them out of business. One particular allegation in the suit alleges that the SWAT team conducted a raid where officers were caught on video mistreating the owners and patrons… until they started tampering with the surveillance cameras and covering them with panties.nothing to hide, nothing to fear?
* A Macon Georgia police officer has been placed on paid leave pending termination after being arrested on a misdemeanor simple battery family violence charge involving dispute with his wife. It’s always interesting to see how different departments have different thresholds for disciplining officers. For example…
* Philadelphia Pennsylvania has had to dish out over $2,400,000 since 2008 in back pay, benefits, and court costs because of arbitrators forcing the city to rehire police officers they tried to fire for misconduct. When asked where the bar should be to disqualify a cop from being a cop, the president of the police union responsible for all the rehires said “only for rapes and murders.” Held to a higher standard indeed.
* A Seattle Washington police officer seen in a recent high-profile video standing by and doing nothing while a gang officer stomped on an innocent man’s head is facing a lawsuit of his own for allegedly throwing a man face-first into the pavement, punching him in the groin, then beating him both at the scene and later at the police department when he arrested the man while he tried to walk away from a dispute with a security guard who told him a restaurant was closed while others were still being served.this is typically what happens when a police officer is given a slap on the wrist for what would normally be a felony assault, then given back pay and all but an apology for being disciplined, then put back on the streets again.
* Jacksonville Florida police have settled an excessive force lawsuit for $65,000 to a woman who was tackled and arrested for running a red light… while she was at the ER because she was in premature labor. The officers had already cuffed her and were putting her into a cruiser when a nurse rushed out and told officers that she needed treatment right away. She spent 10 days in the hospital, fortunately neither she nor the baby suffered permanent harm though.
* A Puyallup Washington police officer has been charged with assault and reckless driving in an alleged road rage incident where he chased down a car while off-duty, rammed it off the road, and then pulled a gun on the driver after he had honked his horn and passed the officer who was sitting at a green light in his personal car in plain clothes.one of these days, an off-duty officer is going to pull his gun and get killed by an armed citizen defending himself. I'll bet we see a capital murder charge on that one. equal protection? I say not.
* A Denver Colorado police officer is under investigation after a woman who had an unspecified outstanding warrant claims the officer let her go without arresting her during a traffic stop in exchange for oral sex. This one may seem tenuous except that police appear to be taking this one seriously as they’ve conducted a search of the officer’s home and have requested DNA samples.
* A Billings Montana police officer was charged with DUI and a seatbelt violation after rolling his personal car in an alcohol-related accident.
* The former longest-serving ever Cuyahoga County Ohio sheriff has pled guilty to two charges of theft in office and an ethics violation for using deputies to sell fundraiser tickets and other violations. He has agreed to pay $130,000 in restitution over the charges but still faces sentencing.
* The New York NY police department is being sued by 9 people alleging that the department’s stop & frisk and summons issuance quota policies have led to civil rights abuses and false arrests. Lawyers are hinting that, with the city’s 50%+ dismissed case rate, that this suit may become a class action lawsuit. I wonder if the commissioner will still be willing to say he’s proud of his quotas if that happens?
* Three Akron Ohio police officers have been put on paid leave after they were arrested on felony and misdemeanor drug charges for illegal possession of steroids.
* A Los Angeles County California sheriff’s Lieutenant is under investigation after a dispatcher filed a claim against the county for doing nothing to stop him from harassing her, which allegedly culminated with the lieutenant sexually assaulting the employee, who was then fired.
* A New Hanover County North Carolina deputy was arrested on two charges of assault on a female after alleged alcohol-related domestic violence incident where he hit both his wife and his juvenile daughter.
* A Fayette County Ohio deputy was sentenced to 3 years in prison and ordered to pay back the nearly $30,000 he stole from evidence & forfeiture funds during his time as a deputy.
* A Laredo Texas police officer has been placed on administrative re-assignment after being arrested on domestic violence charges.
* A Tulsa Oklahoma police officer has pled guilty to handling a gun while intoxicated charges over an apparent alcohol-related incident where he pulled a gun on bar staff after he was kicked out of a club for groping a female waitress.very much unlike the baltimore story, where an intoxicated off duty cop executed a marine corps veteran for doign the exact same thing. That tax feeder is currently sitting a desk and still getting paid.
