ALL POLITICS ASIDE:

The continued decline of the City of Detroit is something I never thought I would see in my lifetime. It dates back to the 1700's, has a great history, culture and was at one time the shining example of the American Dream.

50 years of economic mismanagement has left it largely abandoned. by some estimates some 60 to 70% of private houses sit empty, abandoned, foreclosed or simply burned to the Ground.

And it is now spreading outward... As jobs and industry continue to flee the City and it's Metro area the blight is spreading outside of the city into what were the suburbs of Metro Detroit. When will it stop?

For those of you that want... Post pictures here of what you remember DETROIT to be.

Detroit is a city on the edge of total collapse, top 8 employers in the city are either Government or Municipal Unions that produce NOTHING.

Detroit needs BUSINESS.. It's two biggest employers are The City of Detroit and Detroit Public Schools

GM and Chrysler are # 9 and #10 on the list and dont employ that many people Combined!

The top employers in Detroit are: (BLUE NAMES are Government/Municipal Unions)

1 Detroit Public Schools 13,750
2 City of Detroit 13,187
3 Detroit Medical Center 10,499
4 Henry Ford Health System 8,502
5 U.S. Government 6,335

6 Blue Cross Blue Shield 6,000
7 Wayne State University 5,019
8 State of Michigan 4,910

9 General Motors 4,652
10 Chrysler 4,517
11 U.S. Postal Service 4,106
12 Quicken Loans 4,000
13 St. John Health System 3,818
14 DTE Energy 3,771
15 Wayne County 3,674

16 MGM Grand Detroit 3,000
17 Compuware 2,597
18 MotorCity Casino 2,424
19 American Axle 1,990
20 Greektown Casino 1,800
21 Comerica 1,706

General Motors and Chrysler employ 9,000 People. But when you have GOVERNMENT and MUNICIPAL UNIONS as your top employers you are in massive trouble. They EARN NO MONEY...THEY SELL NO GOODS. They are paid for by the State! The State gets it from TAXES and the tax base has been declining for 50 years!

The City needs major help, but a Bailout isnt going to fix this. Industry built this city and only industry will save it.

What constructive Ideas would you recommend to the City of Detroit to help them save themselves?

What are the Biggest Problems?

No offense friend....but when you throw public employees under the bus...you've effectively set up an environment ripe for antagonism and lack of civil debate.

Kids still need educated...streets still need protected, fires still need to be extinguished.

EDIT:....I hit the submit button by accident....I'll create a new post with suggestions.

Taxes. No one wants to set up shop or move to the city because its too expensive tax wise. You kight pick up a house for $500. But after back taxes its gonna be over $80,000. Who would want to move there?! Who would want to set up a business there with a tax rate like that? And who would want to work there with the PERSONAL income tax the city imposes as well?

Ok...as for suggestions....

Make American business accountable. If they want to be "American businesses" that have the global credibilty that an American business has....then they need to take care of the people that allows them their excess. The workers...who are also the CONSUMERS of their products and services. If big business starts to take care of the people....everyone thrives. If big business chooses to seek the path of least resistance(cheapest cost vs. highest price possible), then Detroit is the first of many.

The banking sector should be held accountable...the manufacturing sector should be held accountable...the energy industry, the education system, the healthcare system.

Now...if you think that public employees are the CAUSE of the.problems in Detroit, then I say to you that Public employees are merely a symptom....not a cause. When industry and by default, the tax base was there....public employees weren't a problem at all.

Think about it....you can't keep screwing over the working class, who make up the vast majority of the citizens of Detroit...and America as a whole and expect the same level of services. Who's gonna want to teach.your bratty kids for crap wages?....take their lives in their.hands protecting your property against crime and fire?

I think there has to be a restructuring of the tax structures that exist and a good amount of incentive and deregulation to spur development.

Chapter 9 will be critical to this.

Also, the Government needs to be term limited. City Council - 2 terms MAX.

Make them work for the people...not themselves.

Yeah, when on the verge of bankruptcy, clearly the only reasonable solution is to reduce income.

New York city has an income tax as well, yet it is a booming metropolis and financial center. The income tax in both cities us miniscule compared to the federal or state ones and anyone seriously taking it into account when deciding where to live us an ideologically driven dumbass.

Governments are naturally large single sources of employment. Please compare it to the largest employers in other cities before going on your stupid conservative rant, dumbass.

Yep, this dumbass considers schools to just be waste, educating our children us a vampiric drain on society and nothing more. This, my friends, is conservatism in a nutshell. A real society produces useful things, like yachts, mansions, and CDO's, not over educated scientists.

Yeah...imagine that...no tax base to draw on. Bet you the upper income neighborhood schools are doing quite well though

are you kidding....do you know how much we send Detroit every year from state taxes?......the Detroit school system spends more per student than I paid to send my daughter to the state university......
