Pope Francis has called for an end to “violence and extremism” in his opening address on the first-ever papal visit to Iraq, long scarred by war and now gripped by the coronavirus pandemic.

The 84-year-old defied a second wave of the global pandemic and renewed security fears to make a “long-awaited” trip to comfort one of the world’s oldest Christian communities, while also deepening his dialogue with Muslims.

“May there be an end to acts of violence and extremism, factions and intolerance,” urged Francis in the stirring address at the presidential palace in Baghdad on Friday.

At the palace, the head of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics gave a moving address, stressing the deep roots of Christianity in Iraq.

“The age-old presence of Christians in this land, and their contributions to the life of the nation, constitute a rich heritage that they wish to continue to place at the service of all,” said Pope Francis.

Be a good Catholic, Joe. Go home.

Pope Francis meets Grand Ayatollah Sistani on historic Iraq tour

1280.jpg

Pope Francis has had a symbolic meeting with Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, one of the most senior clerics in Shia Islam, in Iraq’s holy city of Najaf.

The historic meeting in Sistani’s home was months in the making, with every detail painstakingly discussed and negotiated between the ayatollah’s office and the Vatican.

When the time came, the 84-year-old pontiff’s convoy, led by a bullet-proof vehicle, pull up along Najaf’s narrow and column-lined Rasool Street, which culminates at the golden-domed Imam Ali Shrine, one of the most revered sites in the world for Shia. He then walked the few metres to Sistani’s modest home, which the cleric has rented for decades.

I hope that Francis and his team are very aware that he is an absolute gift for a black-ops MOSSAD strike. Just imagine the Izraeli racist glee at blaming Muslims for an attack on the Holy Father.

Where was his courage when all of those ancient Christian communities were being wiped out by ISIS in Iraq?

Didn't you see him ? In his Vatican-approved tank turret wearing camouflage papal vestments and zuchetto ?

Jezus- posts here just don't get any dumber than yours. Stick to ridiculing the anti-pandemic efforts.

Bible thumping fundamentalist American Protestants do not believe the Syriac and Orthodox Christians of the Middle East are "real" Christians.

Well- they're not exactly ' white' , are they.

Pope Francis’s visit to Iraq: Beyond the symbolism
Interfaith dialogue is important, but the fate of Iraqi minorities is hinged on the success of state-building in Iraq.

Iraq's most revered Shia cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani met with Pope Francis and his delegation at his home in the holy city of Najaf, on March 6, 2021

Indeed, religious leaders have to do their part. And in this sense, Pope Francis’s visit to Iraq is a significant undertaking that could help improve conditions for Iraqi minorities. But ultimately, their fate will be determined by the ability of the Iraqi political elite to resist foreign pressure, build a stable and functional state, distribute the country’s wealth to its people and ensure their safety and security.

Prob the same place you were when bush unleashed the Israli military on Lebanon w/ the ok to kill anything that moves........

Sistani mostly refused eye contact , and only let the Pope take his hands.. I dont think he was thrilled at the meeting..

Other then that this pope seems determined to mingle X-tianity with some universal "Abraham" type pan-religion.
I would not be thrilled with the Pope's watering down of Christianity
