The Korean War and MASH

MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN
While watching some MASH reruns, an odd realization came to me.

While the Korean war lasted 1950 to 1953 (approximately 3 years), the Movie TV series ran from 1972 to 1983 (approximately 11 years).

Just a little bit of trivia. :D

Yes, they show M*A*S*H reruns over here. Brilliant stuff, doubt that it would get made today though.

Charles Emerson Winchester III, clearly the Republican of the M*A*S*H unit.

The success of M*A*S*H was because of the anti Vietnam war sentiment that swept our nation in the early 1970s.

The line, "fetid and festering sewer", referred to in that episode, was indeed speaking about Vietnam.

A waste of human life that accomplished exactly nothing.

USFREEDUMB needs to realize that.

Yes indeed, a metaphor for the Vietnam War.

It does not happen so much anymore, but in the not-to-distant past one would still hear multitudes of conservatives wail that we "should have stayed" in Vietnam, kept fighting until the bitter end, until the "final victory".... That it was really the Kenyan Marxist-Socialist American press and the dirty college hippies that "lost" the Vietnam War for us.

I always thought some part of MASH was figuratively speaking to those knuckleheads and war mongers, by highlighting the utter futility and moral degeneracy of the Vietnam War.

There are still plenty of those "knuckleheads" here on JPP...

I have in-laws in Saigon and they can give you chapter and verse on what the Viet Cong did to the populace. They were nasty bastards intent on imposing a rigid Communist system on the South. It was only when the Viet Minh finally realised that they didn't have a fucking clue how to run a successful economy that they let the Saigonese turn the country around. The only reason they did that was because they realised that there was a very real prospect of a new war starting up.
