The left got their hooks into the NFL long ago.

During the Louisiana gubernatorial race in the early 1990s, the NFL interjected itself into the controversy between candidates Edwin Edwards and David Duke. The NFL stated if Louisiana elected Duke, the NFL would never stage any Super Bowls in New Orleans as long as Duke was in office.

Duke immediately plummeted in the polls. Hosting Super Bowls are a proven economic quantity to the people of Louisiana.

Naturally, the NFL's statement had to be Duke-specific. They couldn't merely say "if any state elects former Klansmen," because that would have included beloved Kleagle Robert Byrd (D-WV).
