The NRA is a terrorist organization and should be banned

say what? are you daft?
No, I'm using Watermarks style of debate. Namely, saying whatever the hell I feel will piss someone off. But if you think about it, they kinda are.

Without the NRA we would not have the vaunted American marksmanship that proved invaluable during WWI. Theoretically, we wouldn't have been as militarily as powerful as we are now. Without that we would most likely have fallen victim to communism from the USSR. So yeah, I'd rate the NRA as the greatest civil liberty/human rights organization in the history of man kind.

The NRA is chiefly responsible for the NFA of 34. they worked hand in hand with congress in writing it. They are also responsible for parts of GCA 68. They are also complicit in not protesting vehemently or even threatening to oust senate members who could be seen voice voting for the 86 hughes amendment.

The NRA is just as responsible as the government for infringing on the right to bear arms.

The NRA is responsible for fighting to keep our right to have guns. Those rights would have been lost many times over the last few decades without the powerful lobbying of the NRA.

But more importantly, the NRA gives safety and marksmanship training to thousands of people every year. That is the true purpose of the NRA.

Yeah, I'm not happy with all they've done, but still do the most to keep our RKBA sacred. I know they don't have much going for them with the NFA crowd, and are only recently starting to accept the EBR and 50 cal shooters, but 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' applies still. The NRA insures and backs nearly 70% of all private ranges in the country, introduces new youths to shooting sports, and is partly responsible for there being 42(I think, please correct me if I'm wrong) shall issue states in the union.

Like I said, I don't like everything they've done. Their arguments in Heller pissed me off, as did them not opposing 86 like they should have. But that can be counter productive. Take a longer term view of how the gun rights war has been fought. It's took 70 years from NFA to the sunset of the Brady Bill. A dogged determination is nice, but so is patience. Let the NRA handle their side, and let JPFO, GOA, SAF, et al handle the other side. I'm a life member of ALL those groups.

The bold print (mine) is the original stated goal of the NRA. The political side has always been the most visible, but not the most important.

The introduction to shooting, for many young people, is under the guidance of the NRA. They keep the safety, skills, and the sport alive.

Technically they were started to improve the shooting skills of union soldiers due to their poor performance in the civil war.

Yes, they started out as a training organization to teach marksmanship and gun safety. Even in the post-civil war era they had serious safety rules in their training.
