the B-1 Bomber...sucked. cost over 200 million per plane and never worked. a total fiasco. carter had canceled it and wanted to wait for the B-2 bomber, since experts said the B-1, if it even worked, would be outdated by the mid 90's....

But President Carter had good reason to cancel the expensive new B-1 bomber the Air Force wanted: it would be able to penetrate Moscow's continually improving air defenses until only the mid-1990's.

Mr. Carter decided to wait for the B-2 ''stealth'' bomber, and extend the life of the B-52's by fitting them with cruise missiles launchable from outside Soviet airspace. The B-2 may yet have problems of its own, as a New York Times Magazine article today suggests. But Mr. Carter's skepticism about the B-1 was not misplaced.

The Air Force rushed the plane into production to maximize its brief lifespan. The B-1 was built on time and roughly within cost, but at a terrible price: it doesn't work as promised.
