Politics is secular by design. The founding fathers knew what happens when religion seeks to control. They are not able to mingle too much without compromising each other.

so called "religious" morality is mostly based on reason.

separation of church and state does not mean the separation of humanity from morality, though many seem to think so.

'homosexuals are an abomination'. I think that's in the Bible. So, 'religious morality' ISN'T based on reason, is it.
'Separation of Church and State' means you separate humanity from religious dogma.
The WHOLE purpose of the separation, is to base your Laws on REASON, rather than Old World SUPERSTITION.

"Chapters 18 and 20 of Leviticus form part of the Holiness code and list prohibited forms of intercourse, including the following verses:

"You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination." Chapter 18 verse 22[1]
"If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them." Chapter 20 verse 13[2]"
