What can I tell you. We also call the place you park your car "the driveway", and the place you drive your car (at least in Pittsburgh) "the Parkway"!

We don't call them interstates on the West Coast, we call them "freeways," and then we call state routes and other major motorways "highways."
We say "highways" also for state and major roads but "freeway" is a little too high-tech for the kind of roads we have here in the East.

We have Interstates in CA.
We have 'em in Washington, too, but everyone just says "freeway."
We call them I-5, I-15, etc.
