The State of the Union Address

it should be done away with, it’s antiquated, and regardless of what President delivers it, it has turned into a circus. One side sits quietly disinterested scoping their phones while the other is up and down every five seconds applauding anything the President says. It is silly and disingenuous

Per the Constitution, the President is required to address the Congress, but it doesn’t specify anything as a State of the Union, in fact, back in the day, the President did it in written form

I actually agree with you. I haven't watched on since nixon and an email would suffice.

The right today is beating their chest about how Trump "set a trap" for Democrats and they fell right into it.

Like, really? Is that what we're after here? Reminds me of all of their giddiness when Trump "trolls" the country, as though expert trolling is what we want out of a world leader.

You've got to admit It's not a very proud day to be a Democrat... Do you think they were "trapped"?

Kill the speech. It was once a quick synopsis of accomplishments and plans. For 112 years there was no speech at all. A written letter was sent to Congress. In 1913, Wilson did it . Then FDR did it on the radio. In 1947, Truman did it on TV but not prime time. LBJ moved it to prime time. It is a mess now. Trump did not give a State of the Union, but held a crappy rally full of lies and childish insults.

Was it a "crappy rally full of lies and childish insults" when Biden did one?

Any one in my lifetime has been crappy, and gotten progressively worse with each President.

When Joe Wilson yelled out “liar” in the middle of Obama’s State of the Union the floodgates opened, any sense of civility or respect slowly disappeared on both sides of the aisle

It is antiquated and long past it’s intended purpose

Trump has the intelligence of a baboon and the class of an old west saloon spittoon. (Wow, unintentional rhyme.)

He displayed that on Tuesday night during his State of the Union speech to the congress.

Much better...and a hell of a lot more truthful...if he had merely sent them a note saying, "We are all fucked...even me."

Any thoughts that he has outsmarted ANYONE...is little more than silly fiction.

Our country has never been in worst shape during my lifetime.

Too bad, that.

That’s what I meant by post watergate.

That's painting with a pretty big brush.
I was too young to understand.

I've studied military history enough to know that JFK came within one person's bad decision--that thankfully didn't happen--of having a nuclear war at least twice. I do remember his assassination and the funeral etc., that followed, seeing it on our old black and white TV that had been relegated to the furnished basement in our house.
Vietnam already mentioned. LBJ worst president in my lifetime because of it.
Toss in LBJ's "Great Society" that died with the Watts riots, the disaster that became Medicare /aid, his looting the social security system to pay for it, among other disasters.
