If the federal government controls everything why are there any variances between the states?

It is naive to think government (at any level) controls those factors. How does a new city government increase or decrease crime since they don't usually make major policy changes? In my state those officials at the city/school district level are non-partisan and do not run on party labels.

There seems to be a real need to believe our party makes everything better.

Leaving aside the idiocy of people trying to tell others how to vote on here (as if there are a bunch of fence sitters who post here who regularly vote both Democratic and Republican and therefore can be convinced) I do think policies implemented are important. No one branch of government has total control of course but use San Francisco as an example where we just recalled our DA. The feeling was he was too supportive of criminals and was soft on even the bad criminals. He had the power to charge more folks if he desired. So to answer your question local government (or the DA) does have a say in how crime is prosecuted (or isn't).

Neither can you. In my case, it's more one of I'm smart enough to not want to spend my money on living in a fucked up state like California or New York. Oh, Chevron just moved their Corporate headquarters to Texas leaving California... Another large corporation gone.

(All the DA's in SF are liberal, Chesa Boudin was very progressive). I don't know how we compare to other cities. The reason he was recalled was people felt less safe here. Our City is also 1/3 Asian and there were a lot of attacks on Asian and many in the Asian community felt he showed more empathy to criminals than to Asian crime victims. (A good number of the people attacking Asians were black so some of the DA's biggest backers were in the black community so he found himself in a tough position and didn't want to speak out)

People bought what he was selling on the campaign trail about criminal reform, less people in prison etc. so that's why he was elected. But once in office and stories of people who should have been behind bars who were instead out in the streets committing more crime, along with the general feeling of being less safe, and all that good will from the campaign trail was gone.

Yes, I’ve lived in OK all my life, SE OK since ‘74 when my dad retired from the Army. I would not like living in Central or Western OK. Much too flat and no trees to speak of.

I have travelled to most of our contiguous states on purpose. I still lack the Dakotas and Michigan. I like visiting other places and seeing things I’ve read about. I also like visiting with the people from other states. I’m different from my wife in that respect. I’ll strike up a conversation with a willing stranger anytime I can wherever I am. I also have relatives all over the US and a couple of places in Europe. I say that to say this: When I say things like, “I’d rather live here than anywhere else,” it isn’t a statement completely born of ignorance.

What do I like about here? Cost of living is low, regulation is minimal, I’m just far enough from civilization to be comfortable but in 25 minutes I can be in a town with a few restaurants, a Walmart which I try to avoid, a very nice grocery store, a locally owned store on par with Lowe’s and a small hospital and then I can be at a superior heart and stroke hospital in 50 minutes. Also my own Choctaw tribal hospital is 25 minutes in the other direction, so my physical needs are well met.

My hobbies can be participated in here for minimal cost, I love the people here…I mean we have our share of nuts but for the most part folks here are friendly and nice and will step up and help anyone if needed.

The biggest tell for me is that no matter where I visit, conservative state or liberal, two weeks is my limit. I’m ready to get back home. Not necessarily to just the comforts of my house but back home to my people. Yes, I’m very happy here. There are probably other states where I could be happy but I think I’ll stay here a few more years.
