Roughly one-third (32%) of Latino registered voters describe their political views as conservative, while 36% say they are moderate and 28% say they are liberal.
Millennial Latino voters (ages 18 to 35) are more likely than non-Millennial Latino voters (ages 36 and older) to say they are liberal. Among Latino Millennial voters, 37% describe their political views as liberal, compared with 21% among Latino non-Millennial voters.
The biggest difference in political views is between supporters of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Among Latino voters who support Trump, 60% say they are conservative, compared with 28% of Latino voters who support Clinton. At the same time, seven-in-ten Latino voters who support Clinton say they are moderate (37%) or liberal (33%). By comparison, among Latino voters who support Trump, 30% describe their views as moderate and 6% say they are liberal.
Latino registered voters who are Spanish dominant are more likely than those who are English dominant or bilingual to say they are conservative. Among Spanish-dominant Latino voters, 45% say they are conservative, compared with 30% among Latino voters who are bilingual or English dominant.
At the same time, U.S.-born Latinos are more likely than immigrant Latinos to describe their political views as liberal. Among registered voters, 32% of U.S.-born Latinos say they are liberal, compared with 17% of foreign-born Latinos.
Overall, the trend does show that American-born Latinos skew liberal, but older Latinos skew conservative. A large chunk of them are moderate as well.
If we look at various issues closely, the picture gets more interesting.

Observers have assumed that Trump’s rhetoric on immigration would turn off Latino voters en masse, even some of the more conservative ones. But it seems that Trump’s immigration approach isn’t a deal-breaker for many Latinos, because they either agree with him or aren’t that amped up about the issue.
According to a recent Pew poll, a fifth of Latino voters say that there are too many immigrants in the United States, and a quarter favor Trump’s idea of building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. About half of Latino voters say they are fairly worried that a family member or close friend might be deported, but the other half is not too worried about such deportations, according to that same survey.
Specifically, most Latinos who were born abroad say they are worried about deportations, but the majority of Latinos who were born in the United States are not.
“There has long been a significant portion of the Latino population that supports reducing immigration and closing the borders,” said Melissa Michelson, a political science professor at Menlo College in California and author of the 2014 book “Living the Dream: New Immigration Policies and the Lives of Undocumented Latino Youth.”

Hispanic registered voters are split on the issue of abortion—48% think it should be legal in all or most cases, while 44% say it should be illegal in all or most cases. Included among those who think abortion should be legal are 28% of Hispanic registered voters who say there are some situations where abortion should be restricted and 21% who say there should be no restrictions at all. And included among those who think abortion should be illegal are 29% who say there are some situations where abortion should be allowed and 14% who say abortion should never be allowed.
The views of Hispanic registered voters are similar to those of white and black registered voters—some 49% of blacks and 53% of whites think abortion should be legal, while some 44% of blacks and 41% of whites think abortion should be illegal.
Looking at all Americans, regardless of their voter registration status, whites (54%) are more likely than blacks (47%) and Hispanics (44%) to think abortion should be legal. Among all Hispanics, 51% think abortion should be illegal in all or most cases, including 20% who think abortion should never be allowed.
On the issue of abortion, Hispanics overall have long been more likely to say it should be illegal in all or most cases. Over the last decade, this view has not changed much among all Hispanics, with between 51% and 57% saying abortion should be illegal in all or most cases (Pew Research Center, 2014c).16
This difference between Latino registered voters and all Latinos may reflect different views among U.S.-born and foreign-born Latinos, as most Latino registered voters were born in the U.S. Foreign-born Latinos oppose abortion by a margin of nearly 2-to-1: 60% say it should be illegal in all or most cases, while just 35% say it should be legal. By contrast, 51% of U.S.-born Latinos think abortion should be legal, while 43% think it should be illegal.
With abortion, it's again often a matter of where someone was born as to how they view the issue. Foreign born Latinos skew more conservative on abortion, while those born here are more liberal about it. Still, it brings about an ironic situation for those in favor of open borders.
If a policy of amnesty is adopted, the people allowed in and allowed citizenship will likely shift policy in more conservative directions on key issues. Latinos are liberal on certain issues (like the welfare state and gun control), but the foreign born ones are conservative on other issues (like abortion and sometimes even immigration itself).
In countries where most people have a mixed heritage, colorism becomes the issue. This is seen in countries like Brazil.
It's somewhat similar to the colorism that exists in the black community between light skinned black people vs. darker skinned black people.
In short, humans are basically wired to discriminate to a certain extent.
