I recently read the story of Kayla Mueller, a young American girl from Prescott, Arizona, whose parents were honoured by President Trump at his recent State of the Union speech. This acknowledgement of Kayla's parent who were invited to be present at the SOTU speech was in the context of US forces successful missions this year to eliminate monsters like the terrorist mastermind Quasam Solimeni and the barbaric former leader of ISIS Abu Bakar Al - Bagdadi.
Found out that Kayla was a very compassionate and kind-hearted young person, who was a human rights activist and humanitarian aid worker. In 2015 she was abducted by ISIS troops from a "Doctors Without Frontiers" hospital in Syria during the civil war that was raging in the country at the time. Kayla was imprisoned by ISIS at one of their military bases in Syria where she was brutalised, tortured and repeatedly raped. That same year, 2015, she was forced into marriage with Abu Bakar Al - Bagdadi himself, the Leader in Chief of the ISIS organisation, who raped her over a period of some 500 days before having her murdered. (All of this information comes from other captives at the time who knew Kayla but miraculously managed to escape and recount the horrors of their imprisonment under ISIS).
The other SOTU moment I wanted to know more about was President Trump's honouring of Charles McGee, the Tuskagee Airman, a fighter pilot who flew more than 130 combat missions in WW - 2. He was one of the first African - American military pilots to fly in combat. McGee always had a great love of flying...(to be continued) but he recalls how he and his fellow Tuskagee pilots suffered adversity in the early years of the war due to discrimination and segregation. This was because during the war African-Americans were still subject to Jim Crow laws. The American military was still segregated as was much of the federal government. The Tuskagee airmen were subjected to discrimination both within and outside the army. Charles McGee went on to serve his country in the Korean war and the Vietnam war. In recognition of his service to America, a few weeks before he gave his SOTU address, President Trump signed a Bill promoting Charles McGee to Brigadier General. Before delivering his SOTU address, Trump summoned McGee to the Oval Office where her personally pinned the new insignia of rank onto his shoulders.
There were a number of touching moments like this during Trump's SOTU and I think they had the effect of making the occasion very real and very meaningful. When you saw the heartbroken faces of Kayla Mueller's parents in the audience as Trump honoured them and their lost daughter, it put the assassination of Al-Bagdadi in it's proper perspective. This was no comic book villain, this was a real person who was evil to the core, someone who was directly responsible for the torture and murder of untold 1000s of innocents and the condemnation of their families and loved ones to endless suffering and grief. You now understood exactly why Trump ordered his military to exterminate this monster; likewise that other monster President Trump eliminated - Qasam Soleimani who had the blood of hundreds of American servicemen on his hands and was planning yet more carnage.
What really, really pissed me off about the SOTU speech Trump delivered was that when these special moments took place, or when, in the course of his speech, Trump announced that extraordinary, record - level, progress had been made in boosting the numbers of: African-Americans; Hispanics; women; veterans; disabled persons and young people who were now in work, or that the USMCA trade deal was now ratified and the trade deal he had managed to cut with China was a big win for America or the welcome news of a revival in manufacturing; when, in short, he told the nation all of the good news he had to tell and there was lots of it (on top of what I've just mentioned), the Democrats in the audience just sat on their hands with stony, resentful expressions on their faces. They refused to stand and applaud, even when Trump announced policy measures that had benefited the typical Democrat voters in the electorate. They groaned and even at times booed. The Democrats all looked as though they had carrots stuck up their arses (big ones) So did Nancy Pelosi who was seated next to Mike Pence on the stage behind President Trump. As well as looking like a petulant bitch, Nancy was "chewing her cud" (as usual) and making these bizarre, peculiar facial expressions that brought to mind tardive dyskinesia.
I don't think Pelosi should be allowed to get away "scot free" with shredding the Presidents SOTU speech in the way she did. This was inexcusable behaviour that set a very bad example for the American people about the importance of respectful and civil behaviour in society. It totally demeaned the dignity of the House of Representatives and the American Constitution. The President of America is require under Article 11, Section 3, Clause 1, of the Constitution to periodically "give to the Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient." Pelosi's nasty, mean-spirited stunt embarrassed the House of Representative in front of the world. I think there is no point in any Republicans wasting time with filing censure resolutions or referring Pelosi's behaviour to an ethics committee; she just need to go. She needs to resign. Pelosi has clearly "lost it", and I think, in any case, given she is 80 years old, she needs to get out of the hurly-burly of federal politics and retire.
