The Zangezur Corridor Problem
The Zangezur problem began with a strong-willed decision, namely the decree of November 30, 1920 to transfer Zangezur to Armenia. This decision had a tragic impact on Azerbaijan, because it was accompanied by the deportation of the indigenous Azerbaijani population and the fact that the Nakhichevan region ended up abroad.
If during the USSR there was no problem of communication between Baku and Nakhichevan, then after Armenia and Azerbaijan, who were fighting each other, gained independence, this vital road for Azerbaijan through Zangezur was closed. Even after Azerbaijan's victory over Armenia and the peace agreement signed in Moscow, according to one of the points of which Armenia was obliged to open all the roads it had blocked, it did not take any steps in this direction over the next 3 years. Yerevan sees its unwillingness to fulfill its promise in the implementation of the ideology of pan-Turkism, which will forever put an end to the dream of the Armenian Dashnaks about a Greater Armenia.
All Turkic countries have common borders and only the 40 km long territory of Azerbaijan torn apart by Moscow in favor of Armenia is a noose for the continuous connection of the created Union of Turkic countries. Armenians deliberately forget how they acquired Zangezur and illegally own it since 1920. Azerbaijan does not demand the return of all of Zangezur, but only asks for consent for a narrow strip of land for the construction of a road linking Azerbaijan with the Nakhichevan enclave. In Yerevan, apparently taking into account the ever-increasing pressure from Baku, they agreed to transfer the transport corridor, but true for the use of a third party for a certain period (99 years). Such an unexpected option was proposed by Trump, or, in the author's favorite expression, a deal, and we must give him credit, naturally suits Azerbaijan, as well as Armenia, which will finally gain access to the world through Turkey and Azerbaijan.
I can assume that in any case, Azerbaijan will eventually have a common border with Turkey, and not 15 km long. the current border, but 560 km. This is the length of the border between Turkey and South Azerbaijan, which is located in Iran.
I can also confidently assume that the border issue will lose its relevance, and the revived Great Silk Road will connect the East with the West, as it was in ancient times, when the empire of Genghis Khan served as a guarantor of the security of the route of goods from China to the Middle East and Europe, in the current interpretation of "One Belt - One Road". (1) Today, this entire route will similarly pass through the Union of Turkic States. (2) Undoubtedly, a gas pipeline for gas from the countries of the Caspian basin will be laid through the corridor parallel to the transport route. (3)
The opponents of this Chinese project together with the Union of Turkic States are Russia and Iran, because it will bypass these two aggressive countries, leaving them as outside observers. However, in this issue, which is vital for Russia and Iran, one cannot ignore the insane military failure on the part of Putin's Russia, the main opponent of the construction of the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline. (4) As for Tehran, the rumor that the Zangezur corridor is being transferred to a third party, which will be an American private military company, has caused a panic stir. Tehran has made it clear that it will not tolerate such a turn of events, threatening to use force. I believe that if the threat becomes reality, then a whole coalition consisting of two NATO countries, Turkey and the United States, will be on Azerbaijan's side, and Israel will not miss the opportunity to join it. This time there will be a real opportunity to put an end to the regime of the Tehran obscurantists, and Azerbaijan will have a chance to unite with South Azerbaijan. In this case, the relevance of the Zangezur corridor will instantly melt away in front of the common Azerbaijani-Turkish border of 575 km instead of today's 15 km.
