This is what whitewashing slavery in the South looks like

According to a 2019 Washington Post poll, most Americans know little about slavery. On average Americans could only correctly answer two out of five basic questions about slavery. These dismal statistics are further compounded by national, state and local efforts to whitewash American history. With one foot out the door, former President Donald Trump released his Presidential Advisory 1776 Commission report downplaying slavery and even erased the presence of Native Americans.

Efforts to miseducate the public about history are intentional. They are often motivated by a desire to paint a rosier picture of the American past in order to evade accountability and redress. The Latta Plantation’s event, which promised to highlight the “feelings” of white slaveowners and Confederate soldiers, is revealingly sympathetic.

Yea, Americans are generally idiots. So?

This is the #1 reason why I'm against the Cancel Culture; it erases history instead of building upon it. "Whitewashing" history is equally as bad. Any censorship or distortion of history is a bad thing since it violates George Santayana's most famous statement.

As for the 5 question quiz, I only got 4 out of 5 since I had no clue what percentage of the US population were slaves in 1860. Oddly, it's about the same percentage of African-Americans in the US population today and predicted to remain until 2055: https://worldpopulationreview.com/countries/united-states-population

I disagree with the Yankee meme that slavery caused the Civil War. Slavery didn't cause the Civil War. Secession didn't cause the Civil War. It was Lincoln's decision to invade the South and force the secessionist states back into the Union that caused the Civil War.

Not only only white and black plantation owners, but Indian tribes enslaved blacks too. :hearnoevil:

Dumbass guano don't know a fuckin' thing.

The horrors of American slavery will not be mitigated in a couple of centuries.
Such shame takes at least a millennium to begin fading from the collective memory.

Expecting racial calmness is ludicrous while the ethnicities involved are so clearly still disinterested in calmness.
One thing to keep in mind is that North Americans of African descent did not bring the Euros here in slave ships.

I hate the look of dreadlocks and kitenges and the sound of hip hop music.
So the fuck what?
My great grandparents weren't slaves.
Some people clearly have more to complain about.

That's not what Guno said, but I agree that human beings enslaving other human beings isn't new, it still exists in the world and it most certainly did not begin in the United States.

Native Americans enslaved captives, regardless of skin tone. They weren't the "noble savages" that some purport them to be.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_among_Native_Americans_in_the_United_States

Basically, regardless of skin tone, human beings can be real assholes towards each other.

Two of the questions in that survey are too simplistic in their position.

The first is the question about slavery in all colonies. This one depends on how you define slavery because as it is asked it requires using the historian's fallacy to answer it the way the survey takers "correct" answer is given.

For example, in Massachusetts there were three allowed conditions for slavery from almost the inception of the colony:

You were captured as an enemy in declared warfare. That is, you were a POW and could be forced into labor etc. It was referred to at the time as slavery.
You were forced into slavery as a result of government action. That is, you were a criminal and your punishment was enslavement to pay back for your crime.
You were a slave brought from somewhere else by your owner. That was respecting property rights as they were understood at the time.

So, actual slavery as it was then understood wasn't permitted in this colony except under very specific and limited conditions two out of three of which were seen as normal practice across all of Europe and much of the rest of the world.

The second question that doesn't have a single answer is the one about the causes of the Civil War. Slavery was one cause, but not the only cause, and it is arguable that it was the main cause.

I disagree with the Yankee meme that slavery caused the Civil War. Slavery didn't cause the Civil War. Secession didn't cause the Civil War. It was Lincoln's decision to invade the South and force the secessionist states back into the Union that caused the Civil War.

Slavery caused the Civil War. That is a fact. Lincoln was elected and Southern states saw Lincoln as a threat to Slavery so they left the United States, took up arms against the United States, and attacked a United States fort located off the coast of Charleston SC, Fort Sumter.

It is undeniable, that without Slavery as a Southern institution, no Civil War would have taken place.

This is why truthful history education is so important. Making excuses for Southern secession.

Interesting, I think this article is a perfect response to our denial of our history.

We can agree that teaching history accurately is very important.

Most Americans know almost nothing about history....any history.

What kids are taught is that America is a terrible place.

This thread is a lie.

We could do massive reparations and blacks would still be blaming their poor performance on slavery.

Not in my local district. They are taught the greatness of this country are found in the ideals of our original documents.

However, like people, this country is flawed. A government of, by and for the people is going to be flawed because people are flawed.

A good history teacher can teach students the greatness of this country while not hiding or lying about the flaws.

It is possible and being done. My concern is the people screaming because they saw an assignment. One assignment doesn't lead to bias or a hatred but it often makes the news.

The problem for you is that we know what the schools of education where all teachers train have long been teaching, all of them. They were one of the first institutions fully captured by the WOKE TALIBAN.

Only according to the Right Wing Propaganda/Media.

Again, pick and choose 1 assignment and make it front page Right Wing clickbait. People are easily convinced because the example is true but doesn't mean that is the norm.

No different than painting all cops as racist. Difficult to argue when specic examples are fact. However, the example doesn't define the reality.

An education system dominated by leftists produces people who don't know about slavery? You're a major league idiot.

How do you fix that? Why don't RWNJs want to be teachers and journalists? It's like being a trucker; theoretically it would be 50/50 men/women but only 6% of truckers are women. Why? Physical and psychological differences just like RW mentality and teaching or journalism.

It also takes a special personality to be a politician. One I'd never do. Please shoot me first. OTOH, I would like being on the strategy team or operations. It's just different mindsets and experiences determining those choices.
