More than half the delegates had trained as lawyers, although only about a quarter had practiced law as their principal career. Other professions included merchants, manufacturers, shippers, land speculators, bankers or financiers, physicians, a minister, and several small farmers.
It was a good effort for the times, but it created the most inefficient form of government on the face of the earth, past and present, and it certainly didn't proportion representation fairly at all.
They thought of the new nation as almost a European Union type thing where the states maintained most of the power, and that was a particularly egregious error that's proven impossible to correct.
When we need to be a real nation, the incompatibility of our various factions makes it impossible.
I will always believe that partition is desirable, and I wish that we had let the Confederacy go its separate way in the 1860s.
