Americans don't want to socialize their industries. I've worked for private and government and there is little difference in the amount of greed, customer service, employee pay, etc.

While government agencies do not make a "profit," the organization is governed to maximize revenues. Administrators get higher pay if they supervise more employees which is incentive to grow the number of employees and agencies lobby for more funds.
