Titanic-bound submersible suffered 'catastrophic implosion,' Coast Guard says

Apparently, this submarine had some serious engineering deficiencies.

Ya, and this will certainly create a problem for the space tourism industry, another problem actually, there have been many to include the "Save the Planet" types demanding that it be made illegal. Also remember that the whale watching industry has been repeatedly hammered on "SAFETY!" grounds.

It won’t hurt the space industry it will actually help them by showing them they need very strong safety measures in place

I’m sure they are but this will reinforce it

I am not sure, nor am I sure that space tourism will be allowed in America. There has long been conversations about what will happen the first time people die in space tourism, we might just get to that spot now. Many people over the years going way back have compared exploring outer space with exploring the ocean depths, the historical connection will I am quite sure mean that this event will cause problems for the space tourism industry.

There is also the matter that a whole lot of people are itching to hurt Musk, and hurting SpaceX is a means to that end.

Well we had a teacher die on Columbia and it we moved on from it

We will have to wait and see I guess

I know tourism is being planned though

And you know one hopes that the entire tourism industry is under attack from the "Save the Planet" types. There are actual plans that you will only get one airline trip every two or three years, and the Regime will need to preapprove your trip. Of course this is only going to happen if you have enough social credit points.

You can’t stop technology so even if they delay it
they will never stop it

This is not your grandfather's submersible; inside, the sub has about as much room as a minivan. It has one button. "That's it," said Rush. "It should be like an elevator, you know? It shouldn't take a lot of skill."

The Titan is the only five-person sub in the world that can reach Titanic's depth, 2.4 miles below the sea. It's also the only one with a toilet (sort of).

And yet, I couldn't help noticing how many pieces of this sub seemed improvised, with off-the-shelf components. Piloting the craft is run with a video game controller.

Pogue said, "It seems like this submersible has some elements of MacGyver jerry-riggedness. I mean, you're putting construction pipes as ballast."

Our dive in the OceanGate submersible had made it down only 37 feet when floats came off the platform. And that wasn't supposed to happen. The mission was scrubbed.

There's no GPS underwater, so the surface ship is supposed to guide the sub to the shipwreck by sending text messages. Rush recalled, "I said, 'Do you know where we are?' '100 meters to the bow, then 470 to the bow. If you are lost, so are we!'"

But on this dive, communications somehow broke down. The sub never found the wreck.

"We were lost," said Shrenik Baldota. "We were lost for two-and-a-half hours."
