Better than You
Instead of making one of your own, why don't you just adopt a child?
Because I would rather see my own genetics and family continued instead of shouldering someone else's problem.
Instead of making one of your own, why don't you just adopt a child?
Well... We didn't do it.
We have another client who has adopted two brothers, one 5 and the other 3. Both were exposed to meth and mom drank while she was pregnant. 3 months ago the adoptive parents walked in on the 5 year old strangling the 3 year old to the point of unconsciousness. I am not saying that people should not adopt these children. But if you have kids of your own, you are IMO placing your children in greater danger of harm than they otherwise would have been exposed to.
My brother's ex sisters in law both adopted a boy.
I am going to be real honest here and people are probably going to hate me for it but here goes.
In the US people typically don't give their children up for adoption. Those that do typically (I am going to make some generalizations here it does not apply to ALL adoptions) give up their children for adoption fall into two catagories. The first is the high school or college girl that had a relationship with an otherwise good guy and neither of them are at a place where they can take care of the child but they don't want to abort. This first group contacts expensive adoption agencies, or wealthy childless couples and works out a payment arrangement for their child.
The second group contains those that have had the state terminate parental rights. The mothers and the fathers have personality and behavioral disorders, many of which are passed on to the child. For a significant number of these kids there is also in utero exposure to drugs and alcohol and subsequent contact with drugs after birth. (We just dealt with a case where a three year old had 4 times the detectable levels of meth in his hair). The treatment foster care system is FULL of children with a plethora of behavior and personality disorders. We have another client who has adopted two brothers, one 5 and the other 3. Both were exposed to meth and mom drank while she was pregnant. 3 months ago the adoptive parents walked in on the 5 year old strangling the 3 year old to the point of unconsciousness. My brother's ex sisters in law both adopted a boy. One of them is now 24 and just got out of prison for some minor drug stuff but is otherwise a good kid. The other boy is a former client of mine. I got him a really good deal on a minor explosives charge where he blew up mail boxes at his aunts rental properties. Had he finished his probation without incident he would have had no criminal record. However, he beat the shit out of his girl friend and went to prison on that charge and the remainder of the explosives charge. While in prison he was investigated in connection with an ex-girl friend of his that was murdered in her apartment. He got out and is now awaiting trial for sexually molesting my brothers daughter. In both cases, these boys were adopted by well educated people. Both sisters have MBA's and their husbands are both professionals. They make in excess of $600K per year per family and come form a seriously fundamentalist christian family with a very strong grasp on moral behavior. With ALL the positives they had they BOTH still were involved in criminal behavior that put them in contact with the criminal justice system and the state department of corrections. One of them is on his third serious charge and will spend the better part of the next two decades behind bars.
Adoptions in America are fraught with hidden problems. If you choose to adopt you have my admiration. I have 3 children all under the age of 10 and I am not going to expose them to the hit and miss of an adopted sibling.
