True patriotism.....

We live in communities of a few hundred people, those we know, and are organised in 'imagined communities' such as 'nations', some of which have things in common, some not. Naturally we imagine different forms of 'patriotic' behaviour: on the right it normally means killing and bullying, for decent people caring. It makes more sense, however, to look at how people behave to their real neighbours.

Are you fucking kidding me? Gawd FoX news watchers are just blubbering old fools who break out into tears over anything aren't they? This is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen in my life. I can't believe that idiot actually conducted an interview over this. I couldn't watch more than 10 seconds of it. No wonder their audience skews 80 and over.

I'm amazed that in today's world; people would be shocked and acts like this make the news for doing something that was so common 50 years ago.

Next we'll be calling him "hero" because in today's world, just doing the right/patriotic thing seems to be rare and heroic.

You know what makes me feel just wonderful ?.....not being you, or like you, or near you, or even knowing you.

Couldn't get to your propaganda: they gave me someone advertising the privatised Post Office here. You mean he was childish enough to get involved with one of your brain-washing ceremonies? Saluting flags, or slaveowners or something else from your archaic Konstitution?

Real patriotism has zero to do with holding your hand over your heart in front of a flag.

This thread had nothing to do politics or issues of right and left.....

Real patriotism, as in real 'anything', is showing common courtesy and respect when no one is looking, and thats what makes this news and acknowledging this mans
gesture of respect for HIS country and its flag is refreshing to me....I don't care if he just stood and nodded his head......It would be an honor to shake his hand....
and that is what makes Darla's post so repugnant to me....

Settle down Bravo. You have your own television network dedicated to ferreting out random acts of "patriotism" so you geezers can all sit around bawling into your ovaltine. What more do you want?

A simple acknowledgement that this caretaker showed us something that is sadly missing in todays society and that it was newsworthy....just the fact that it was not
grandstanding for a camera but a heart felt gesture of respect for a country that has been both grossly unjust to his race and at the same time has given him something he feels he
needs to be thankful for....
We can't know what is in his heart, but its clear to me that its not filled with hate. I'd trade a bus load of Al Sharpton's and Ed Schultz's for a couple more of him...
