It might be a stupid reason to vote for Trump but how is that "doubling down" on it?
It's kinda like someone in authority telling you that you can't do something for no good reason and doing it anyway out of spite.
Calling someone 'deplorable' because he supports trump is stupid. Then calling someone a nazi because he votes for Trump is doubling down on stupid. Doubling down on stupid is doing something stupid then doing it again, even worse, expecting different results.
