If we are talking pure short term political advantage, you are correct, impeaching him was a bad move. If you are talking about how it will be looked upon in the future, for our Republic, it is important that he was actually impeached for crimes he committed.

I guess it depends on your goals and if they are short term or long term.

The democrats will lose in November. The Americans will retain a slim majority in the house, and will gain in the Senate.
