Trump announces 'Historic Peace Agreement' between Israel, UAE

There is there a letter higher than page Z we can post this news in? Is there a back burner far back enough?

Ah, the "dismiss the literally unprecedented Middle East peace progress" strategy. What a cunning and convincing move.

I wonder what Trump had to promise Israel in exchange for agreeing to take part in this charade.

This is obviously timed in order to give Trump's sagging reelection chances a boost and give him something to crow and boast about.

Nothing burger.
Bibi gets a BJ. is that what you want to hear?

The statement said that the “diplomatic breakthrough” was at “the request of President Trump,” and that Israel will “suspend declaring sovereignty over areas outlined in the President’s Vision for Peace and focus its efforts now on expanding ties with other countries in the Arab and Muslim world.”

n a surprise statement issued by the White House, Mr. Trump said that Israel and the U.A.E. will a string of bilateral agreements on investment, tourism, security, technology, energy and other areas while moving to allow direct flights between their countries and set up reciprocal embassies in each other’s nation.

In a statement of his own, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo compared the agreement to the peace treaties Israel forged decades ago with Egypt and Jordan. “Today’s normalization agreement between Israel and the Emirates holds similar potential and the promise for a better day for the entire region,” he said.

The White House announcement came several weeks after Mr. Netanyahu announced a new partnership with the U.A.E. to cooperate in the fight against the coronavirus, portraying it as a breakthrough, only to be embarrassed with the Emiratis issued a much more limited statement just hours later describing an agreement between private companies.

Just another thing Trump managed to get done that Obama and Biden could not.

If Trump didn't outright promise them anything specific in terms of a bribe, it's likely because he kisses Israel's ass so hard, they'll do whatever they can to help him get reelected out of sheer self-interest.

The timing of this is just too suspect to have happened on/of its own accord.

Trump is gone and never to be heard from again in politics. Worst political stunt in history.

With him and Nothin'-yahoo both sinking in the political quicksand, it's no surprise that they'd clutch onto each other in hopes of somehow buoying themselves and staying afloat.

Hopefully all they'll succeed in doing, is dragging each other down even faster.

completely missing the dynamic that Israel is making piecemeal peace with the Arabs.
Jorda/UAE/KSA/Egypt

Syria is a basket case, Iran is pushed back after the killing of Soleimani.

Israel is the new partner for peace in the ME
Damn.
You don't even have the most basic understanding of the ME.

Un fucking believable. You fucking idiot.

Israel is the foot kicking the hornet's nest and always has been.

The Gulf States are some of the most Western-Liberal (in the classical sense) Arab states there are. They are looking to bring their nations out of being theocratic monarchies and into being prosperous capitalist ones with some social-welfare aspects mixed in. To do that, they have to give up tribalism and ethnic hatred which they are doing, but that takes time to occur.

I have no idea if they want to get rid of a monarchy - nothing I've read says they do.

Yes they want western investment - but what this really is about is they have no quarrel with Israel
and there is no reason to carry on the Arab block views of the 20th century that "Israel cannot be tolerated"

That and maybe some local geopolitics, like tying their security to Israel as Egypt has

Just another monarchy desperate to avoid the fate of the crooked Shah of Iran. The UAE has already thrown in its lot with the degenerate Saudis- and its losing the US/Izrael initiated war in Yemen.
Will we ever know how much Trump has paid the UAE for this Zion- gobbling ?

joint report describes how Yemen is in the eye of a “perfect storm” of economic shocks, conflict, floods, a plague of desert locusts – and now the coronavirus.

“We are witnessing a very alarming deterioration and we don’t see anything allowing us to stop this current decline,” Annabel Symington, a spokesperson for the UN’s World Food Programme, tells The Independent.

“We need to act now, or it will be too late”.

I was stationed in Bahrain for a while. They are all doing this stuff, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Dubai, and Oman. They figured out that the oil won't last, there's no money in a theocracy, and a happy population doesn't hold revolutions. They have no quarrel with Israel and generally stay out of that fight. They also want to stay out of wars with their neighbors and give more powerful countries elsewhere a reason to step in and squash the more warlike and terrorist supporting countries like Saddam's Iraq or Iran.

Bahrain has nightclubs, allows alcohol in hotel bars and the clubs, has more freedom for women, wants to be the banking and Las Vegas of the Muslim world (the Saudis start arriving every Wednesday to party-- "Allah doesn't see outside the kingdom" while holding a hand over their eyes is the running joke. They put in a Formula 1 track and are on the circuit now, that sort of thing. Dubai caters to the uber rich. Kuwait wants to up its intellectual game with universities and research. They're all doing this sort of thing to bring in money and make connections outside the Arab world.
