U.S. dismissed Ukraine deal for anti-Iran drone tech last year

Nearly seven months ago, Ukrainian officials tried to sell the U.S. their battle-proven technology for downing Iranian-made attack drones. They even made a PowerPoint presentation — obtained exclusively by Axios — showing how it could protect American forces and their allies in a Middle East war.

The Trump administration dismissed the Ukrainians, only to reverse course last week because of more-than-expected drone strikes from Iran.

Why it matters: Snubbing Ukraine's offer ranks as one of the biggest tactical miscalculations by the administration since the bombing of Iran began Feb. 28, two U.S. officials tell Axios.

Iran's inexpensive Shahed drones have been linked to the deaths of seven U.S. service members, and have cost the U.S. and its friends in the region millions of dollars to intercept.

"If there's a tactical error or a mistake we made leading up to this [war in Iran], this was it," a U.S. official acknowledged.

Zoom in: Ukraine is the world's most experienced country in combating Shaheds, which Russia has bought, reproduced and labeled as Geran drones by the thousands for its invasion of its western neighbor.

another U.S. official told Axios that military personnel have "been wanting to go to Ukraine and pull the tech and the tactics from the Ukrainian military ... so that we're innovating and learning."
  • The need for the technology is so great that Trump's sons announced a new business venture Monday to supply the Pentagon with Ukrainian drone technology.

Zelensky, being the great leader and ally he is offered DonOld the technology last year and DonOld didn’t accept it, now he’s begging him for it.

I don't know of any other nation on the planet that has as much battlefield experience with drone technology as Ukraine. Trump is letting his hatred of Zelensky affect America's ability to improve its defense capabilities.

He thought he could do it with our behemoth military equipment, only to find out that $20,000 drones could take out our million dollar missiles and take down a tanker.

I'll take "Things That Never Happened" for $2000, Alex. :rolleyes2:

This story never made any sense...AFU is a NATO army....there are Military officers from NATO nations inside of Ukraine as well as CIA secret army forces along with Mi6 and Mossad officers....do Ukrainians actually have drone expertise that we dont have?

It tend to doubt it.....yes Drone warfare is being invented in our war against Russia in Ukraine but the knowledge spreads rapidly.

It’s true, Ukraine couldn’t match Russian tanks, bombs, airplanes and naval ships, so they had to adapt quickly and develop a cheaper way to fight the Russians and it was with their drone defense.

War evolves with time......the rise of drone warfare was long predicted and was inevitable.....it has nothing to do with Ukrainians being great.

Though Ukrainians are good soldiers, the Russians often compliment their behavior on the battlefield, Scott Ritter talks about this often.

It has to do with Ukraine having to be resourceful and as a result having great success with their drone program.

Since we are reportedly running low on anti missile missiles we're gonna need it.

It took the Russians a bit to catch up but the Russian and Iranian drones are now significantly better than those used by NATO in Ukraine......We have lost the arms race almost everywhere.

So? Ukraine is still having great success with their drone program, and Russia is suffering because of it. Doesn’t matter if the other countries drones are better, they aren’t going to share their technologies with the USA.

Ukraine seems to be having success with downing Russian drones.

If Zelensky can help ...... HE HAD BETTER DO SO!

He has offered, even after the way DonOld has treated him.
If he was an asshole like trump, he'd tell trump to stuff it.

But nobody is an asshole like trump and besides, this might be a good chance for him to force trump into increasing aid to Ukraine.

Just hoping all this crap ends up with the world still in one piece.
