Trump is RIGHT about Regaining the Panama Canal

They were French living in America at the time.
Why would French people working on a French project, in the then Colombia live in America? That would be a hugely long commute to get to work.

As importantly, because it was a French project, supported by the French Government, they would not want their workers living in an unnecessary foreign country. It makes sense for them to live in Colombia, or France, but not America.

Did you know that Colombia is in America, Wally?

Colombia is in America, Wally.

So is Panama.

The workers who attempted to build the Panama Canal for the French primarily came from several countries:

  • France: Many of the engineers, supervisors, and skilled laborers were French.
  • West Indies (Caribbean): A significant number of workers were recruited from Caribbean islands such as Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Jamaica. These workers were often of African descent.
  • Spain: Spanish laborers were also employed, particularly for manual labor.
  • Italy: Italian immigrants, looking for work, also made up a considerable portion of the workforce.
  • Other European Countries: There were workers from various other European nations as well, including but not limited to Portugal and Greece.

@Grok

Nope. Just French living in America while they were attempting to build the Panama Canal (a project which failed).

Haitians and other Caribbean islanders, from Tobago, Guadalupe, French Guiana, etc. with the engineers and other staff being from France.

The Americans of course staffed their skilled labor from the U.S., with Jamaica and Barbados providing most of the unskilled.

Did you know that Colombia is in America, Wally?
No, it is in the Americas. That is different than being in America.

Being in Central America does not make you an American citizen. If it did, then everyone coming up from that region would have an absolute right to enter the USA.

Colombia is in America, Wally.

So is Panama.
They are in the Americas; they are not in America.

Go learn geography, Wally. Word games won't work.

Being an a citizen of America does NOT mean you are automatically a citizen of the United States.

They were not French living in America.

The French made the first attempt at building the Panama Canal, and did a lot of the heavy lifting in doing so. They did not put as much effort into health, so lost a lot more people than the USA. Dying on a project that was later bought out by America does not make those French deaths Americans.

So in short, of the 28,000(not 38,000) people who died building the Panama Canal, 22,000 died before the USA was involved. Because the USA was not involved, the people who were involved would not be living in America.
epic schooling.

Walt comes from behind with an unexpectedly large amount of panama canal knowldedge.

lol sure, and pigs have wings. His attempt at an anti-American screed fell flat on its ass.

Still not as bad a flop as yours usually are; at least he got the name of first country to try and build it right anyway.

The first country to try to build the Panama Canal would be Scotland. It was part of the Darien scheme, and failed so badly that it destroyed the Scottish Government. The direct result was Scotland ceased to be an independent country, and the United Kingdom was born,

The USA was the first to put public health first. Where the others(Scotland, Spain, Columbia, France, maybe more) who attempted got bogged down in the deaths, America spent a lengthy amount of time just dealing with the public health.

Public health regulations are not popular with modern Republicans, but were essential for just surviving long enough to build the Panama Canal.

Actually it was competing steamship companies run by Vanderbilt and Gould who first tried to get a canal going across the isthmus of Central America back during the California gold rush; they were having to either go through Nicaragua or take the long way around South America at the time. Wasn't feasible back then, even after Vanderbilt's mercenaries tried to take over Central America.

In the context of the Nicaragua Gold Rush, "General Walker" refers to William Walker, a notorious American filibuster who attempted to seize control of Nicaragua in the mid-1850s, while "Vanderbilt" refers to Cornelius Vanderbilt, a wealthy businessman who held a monopoly on the transportation route through Nicaragua to California during the California Gold Rush, making him a key player in opposing Walker's takeover due to the potential disruption to his lucrative transit business; essentially, Walker's actions threatened Vanderbilt's control over the crucial Nicaragua transit route used by gold seekers heading to California.

Key points about this situation:
  • Vanderbilt's Transit Company:
Vanderbilt's "Accessory Transit Company" operated a vital transportation system through Nicaragua, utilizing the San Juan River and Lake Nicaragua to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, which was critical for travelers heading to the California gold fields.
  • Walker's Filibustering:
William Walker, a self-proclaimed "filibuster" (a term for an individual who led private military expeditions to seize control of foreign territory), invaded Nicaragua with the intention of establishing himself as the country's leader.
  • Conflict with Vanderbilt:
When Walker took control of Nicaragua, he attempted to seize control of Vanderbilt's transit company, which led to a major conflict between the two.

  • Political Influence and Backlash:
Vanderbilt used his wealth and political connections to oppose Walker, supporting Nicaraguan rebel forces to oust him from power.

  • The U.S. gained Panama's independence in 1903 for them.

public health should never BE forcing untested gene therapies on unwilling participants and shutting down society based on lies.

The Darien Scheme predates the United States, Vanderbilt, and Gould.

The Hay-Pauncefote Treaty of 1901 abrogated the earlier Clayton-Bulwer Treaty and licensed the United States to build and manage its own canal. Following heated debate over the location of the proposed canal, on June 19, 1902, the U.S. Senate voted in favor of building the canal through Panama. Within 6 months, Secretary of State John Hay signed a treaty with Colombian Foreign Minister Tomás Herrán to build the new canal. The financial terms were unacceptable to Colombia’s congress, and it rejected the offer.

President Roosevelt responded by dispatching U.S. warships to Panama City (on the Pacific) and Colón (on the Atlantic) in support of Panamanian independence. Colombian troops were unable to negotiate the jungles of the Darién Gap and Panama declared independence on November 3, 1903. The newly declared Republic of Panama immediately named Philippe Bunau-Varilla (a French engineer who had been involved in the earlier de Lesseps canal attempt) as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary. In his new role, Bunau-Varilla negotiated the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty of 1903, which provided the United States with a 10-mile wide strip of land for the canal, a one-time $10 million payment to Panama, and an annual annuity of $250,000. The United States also agreed to guarantee the independence of Panama. Completed in 1914, the Panama Canal symbolized U.S. technological prowess and economic power. Although U.S. control of the canal eventually became an irritant to U.S.-Panamanian relations, at the time it was heralded as a major foreign policy achievement.

Without Teddy Roosevelt Panama wouldn't have gotten its independence at all.

Teddy Roosevelt was a Republican, so the myth that Republicans were letting workers on the Canal die is rubbish. Need we remind the leftist liars that most of the workers were not whites, or will that cause aneurysms and chronic bedwetting among Democrats?

Scotland never turned one spade of soil on any canal in the western hemisphere that I know of..
