Was Carter flying the helicopter that was disabled by sand in the air intake? That helicopter crash was due entirely to the military brass controlling Eagle Claw. To get better fuel economy they had the dust filters removed from the air intake. The helicopter hit a sand storm, sand got into its turbines, which in turn caused the helicopter to crash.

Sinai negotian aside ( and that is not to take away from those) he was a Russiaphobe who constantly supported NATO expansion -of course he wasn't alone.
