Lefties have been after Trump's tax returns for years, but I missed what it is that lefties are looking for in the returns. Why are lefties so interested in looking at these returns? Is it just to see if there is something in there that could be used to hurt Trump in some way, or is there something specific that lefties are after?

I am asking what the issue is. I don't remember disclosure of tax returns being a requirement for being in office, and I am interested in knowing why lefties have been pushing so hard for them. Have all previous presidents disclosed their tax returns? Were they required to? I have been under the impression that individual income tax returns — including those of public figures — are private information, protected by law from unauthorized disclosure. I have also been under the impression that the Internal Revenue Service is barred from releasing any taxpayer information whatsoever, except to authorized agencies and individuals.

Three simple answers, first, Trump is currently being invesrigated by six different entities regarding his businesses, tax returns might confirm evidence they have already assembled. Congressional Oversight Committees are suppose to practice oversight of the other branches of Gov't., and Cohen's testimony alone gives them reasons to want to see potential relevant information
You don't think it is important for Americans to see if and how the President of the country meets his civic responsibilities?
And lastly, because he refuses to release them lacking any valid reason, raises a lot of questions given every President and candidate for President has done it going back decades
