Lefties have been after Trump's tax returns for years, but I missed what it is that lefties are looking for in the returns. Why are lefties so interested in looking at these returns? Is it just to see if there is something in there that could be used to hurt Trump in some way, or is there something specific that lefties are after?

The left's agenda is transparent. Their objective is to at the very least provide to the people a mistrust and if possible a total trashing of their President all the way up to and into the 2020 election, and at the most uncover any impropriety, embarrassing act, or crime to serve their purposes of influencing the election to the negative for Trump and the positive for their band of low-life scum-bags.

Every presidential candidate for the last half-century provided their tax returns. Trump said he would do it too, several times. Then he did not. Damn, we all think that is pretty fishy. He said Romney should provide his when he was running. Now Trump does not want to provide his. Nixon gave his up when he was under audit. There is no reason Trump should not do it. Unless, he has something to hide. It is obvious he does. There is no cogent argument that defends Trump hiding his. If he was clean he would provide them with great fanfare.
