U.S. military spending: increase by ~10%? By cutting what spending elsewhere?

54 billion dollars is pennies to the military budget and the US GNP, nothing has to be cut for this

Fifty-four billion is pennies but righties scream bloody murder over the 0.02% the government allots to the NEA.

At one point Rumsfeld wanted to "transform" the military into a lighter, more mobile fighting force for the 21st century.

Well, Rummy wasn't much a genius, now was he.

But seriously, why do we need to increase our military spending?

And, why the hell hasn't Trump worked on getting his infrastructure plan going? He has spent a tweety amount of time on banning people from 7 countries, increasing military spending and not an effing thing about infrastructure.

Cold War 2.0 spending precludes that..It's to the point we have all these tank batallions running around Poland. and now are expanding permanent deployments into Scandanavia

While Sweden and Finland are
not NATO members,. In late May,
Sweden ratified a NATO co-operation
agreement that will allow the Alliance
to operate on Swedish territory during
training missions and in case of a crisis.
Similarly, Finland’s ties with
NATO date back to the Balkan wars
in the 1990s and have expanded
considerably since then. Beyond
participating in NATO missions and
training exercises, Finland is working
with NATO to develop cyber-defence
capacity and has become a key NATO
training partner.
Sweden and Finland have both
expressed interest in further expanding
their co-operation with NATO,

Obama put the U.S. on course to spend around $1 trillion on upgrading its nuclear arsenal .....
asking Congress to fund a new class of ballistic missile submarine, a new stealth bomber, upgrades to the current stock of nuclear weapons, a new cruise missile and billions of dollars of other programs.

Funny how these same pinheads were imitating crickets just a few short months ago.....

The NEA already has a budget of about 148,000,000 and they're useless compared to the defense of the nation....

Sesame Street ain't gonna protect you from ISIS or any other idiots trying to kill us....

Ask the Hollywood millionaires to fund the arts, see how much they give a shit about it....Oprah or George Lucas could do it all by themselves with their billions.

Noon / ET 17/02/27

BBC / World News reports the Trump administration has or plans to propose a ~$54 $Billion $Dollar military spending increase, reportedly a ~10% increase, with funds taken from other federal spending, mainly domestic spending.

Is this a good idea?
Is there a reason to beef up what is already the world's most able military; while our infrastructure around the nation is crumbling? Lead contaminated municipal water, water-main breaks, and collapsing bridges? And in this backdrop, we need more nukes? We don't use the ones we have.

Defense is a federal responsibility....municipal waterlines are not....

That is a short-sighted, and substantially ignorant opinion.
During the Revolution, advanced college degrees were not required to serve. General George Washington is reported to have had the equivalent of a 2nd grade education. Not a second grade education. "the equivalent of ..."

It's not merely a new millennium. It's a different world.
Some of the highest technology on the planet is in military use, and the best of that is in use by the U.S. military.

Having an educated work-force isn't merely essential to the prosperity of the United States. It's nothing less than a matter of national security.

I'll spell it out for you.

The standard of high school being sufficient was established at a time when it may have been.
Back then a high school education alone could be enough to earn a citizen gainful employment.

In the 3rd millennium, with the proliferation of computers, robots, and countless other workplace advancements, a high school diploma simply isn't enough.

How would you expect a 3rd Millennium U.S. military infantryman to operate an in situ launched recon drone, if s/he lacks the computer s a v v y ?

There may be all kinds of places to slash the U.S. federal budget. But cutting spending on education is $penny wise and £pound foolish.

I'm sure lunkheads don't think the arts are important, just like I don't think a bloated military is important. Let's discuss the Pentagon spending $640 for a toilet seat, or $7600 for a coffee pot.

You think its so important, you know where to send your contribution....on a scale of 1 to 10 I give the arts a zero.....

You didn't want Obama sitting on cheesy toilet seat when he flew on AF did you....of course not, you didn't complain for the last 8 years....

sequestor has robbed the AF of reliable spare parts -having to scrounge "boneyards"
( museums/old storage) for spare parts.

Trump says no reducing SSA/Medicare.

Maybe he'll shut down the EPA *lol*

As JPP's Trump Dick Sucker In Chief you should be happy when they strip funding from environmental protection.

You and Buddha can high five each other and have a good laugh over it.

What does the National Endowment for the Arts have to do with a college education or George Washington ?

Spell that out....

If you talking about the National Education Association, thats a giant union....why should the taxpayer be supporting them... The National Education Association (NEA) is the largest labor union in the United States.
