U.S. wealth gap between young and old is widest ever

The wealth gap between younger and older Americans has stretched to the widest on record, worsened by a prolonged economic downturn that has wiped out job opportunities for young adults and saddled them with housing and college debt.

The typical U.S. household headed by a person age 65 or older has a net worth 47 times greater than a household headed by someone younger than 35, according to an analysis of census data being released today.

While people typically accumulate assets as they age, this wealth gap is now more than double what it was in 2005 and nearly five times the 10-to-1 disparity a quarter-century ago, after adjusting for inflation.

 How's that Hopey-Changey thing working out for you now?

That's precisely what Obama is trying to change. While simply knocking on ones door and asking for money is frowned upon the solution is for the government to offer services such as medical care resulting in those who have money paying for the service through taxes while the poor are able to obtain services they otherwise wouldn't be able to afford. It could be done easily and fairly but....

In any case being more old than young I do agree with the younger folks. We wonder why younger generations don't have "respect" for their elders but the answer is obvious. Whether its making the loaning of money more difficult so they have to waste money on rent rather than put towards a home to sending them to the slaughter of war the old folks indulge in we use and abuse youth and then expect them to look after us when we get older.

Yes, Virginia, or in this case DY, things will change a lot more when Obama starts his second term. Partly due to his efforts but mostly due to the effort of people like the OWS folks. Youth slapped down the war mongers in the 60s/70s. To paraphrase a well-known personality, "The tree of fairness must be refreshed from time to time with the ego of the greedy."

He's still promising change, and you are still buying it. Fucking pitiful.

There is already change. People have explained that to you before. Medical, for one. After 45 years (or is it more like 75 years the conversation has been going on? Or is that on-going? Going on or on-going? )? :dunno: Iraq. Do you really think the Repubs would be leaving even though they said they would?

You still don't have your free health care, but you're paying for it. Unemployment nearly 10%. Gitmo. Busted real estate market. Nice change, Obama.

The Depression in this country only got worse AFTER the government acted to correct it.

They did the wrong thing though. They should have run the bankers out of the country and returned to a real economy instead of continuing with fiat currency economic totalitarianism.

Sons and daughters up to 26 years old are covered. That's a good thing. That's change and more will come during Obama's second term. Count on it.
