I am forced to use Windows because I need VMware vSphere client and a few other Windows apps, but I refuse to use the abomination of a notebook my work has given to me. So I installed VMware Fusion on my Mac and loaded Windows 7 onto a virtual machine.

Of course, now my concern is this gaping security hole known as Windows tainting my pristine MacBook Pro. Fusion came with 12-month subscription to McAfee, which I do not like. But at the same time, I don't want to pay for anything.

What's currently the best free antivirus? 0_o
 
Avast works for me, and I download porn like it's a rare commodity.

Of course you've got much bigger problems to worry about if you're using a Mac. Like heaven help you if anything breaks that isn't covered by the 3 day warranty (which is everything).
 
heaven help you if you can't find the ctrl key and you claim that it doesn't exist while pretending you know stuff about macs

I am getting déjà vu here, haven't we discussed this before? Anyway IMHO, you can't go wrong with Malware Bytes, AVG2011 and Ad-Aware. Comodo and Zone Alarm are pretty good as well. Of course, if you used Linux Mint you wouldn't have any problems at all.

Windows in a VM client is not a security hole to the Mac OS. Windows viruses can't run on Mac OS, and they definitely can't jump through the virtual machine into the main OS to run on an operating system they can't run on.

I would recommend getting MSE, personally.

Well, what you have said would be true if the virtual machine were 100% isolated. This is not the case in VMware Fusion, at least not the way I need to configure it. Fusion enables mirrored folders and other features that make the experience seamless. I'll never even have to look at the Windows desktop. So while it is true that viruses cannot "run" on Mac OS X, files on the Mac side could become infected and spread to Windows systems. Since this is something I'll be using for work (i.e. transferring files back and forth), that's a scenario I'd rather avoid.

I hadn't tried Avast for a while and I must admit it's very good. It found a nasty virus that the others missed!! I have now installed the Linux version as well.
