Understatement: ‘Oklahoma Students Fail’

These are results from the Oklahoma council of Public Affairs. Looks like they gathered the time to ask 1,000 high school students 10 generic questions. The results set the Idiocracy Gauge on fire.

Take a moment, statistics can be fun, more beyond the fold.

Here is how the Local news reported on the disaster.

Our public schools don't teach this anymore, you dork. That's why we have so many illiterates coming out of the public school system all over the county. Quite frankly, it's damn embarrassing.

I will be the last person to come to the defense of the public education system in Oklahoma. I have been a part of it for over 20 years and I have stated on this board and in several other venues that there needs to be a change in the way things are done/taught. Because of the powers that be putting all of the emphasis on reading and math, we don't even touch on science and social studies in most schools until the 4rd grade. Basically that is all that is taught. It isn't right but that is the way it is in most public schools here. Social promotion is rampant and neither teachers nor students are held accountable. That needs to change.

That being said, I find if funny that Watermark uses a "conservative think tank" (thier words not mine - http://www.news9.com/global/story.asp?s=10620737) to post disparaging (albeit true) information about Oklahoma to seemingly show how stupid a conservative state is. At least to me that is about the only reason WM would think that posting this would prove. Anyway, look at the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs. The goal of this group is to discredit the public school system as much as they can. Look at the articles on their home page (http://www.ocpathink.org/homepage/) and you can tell immediately that the group promotes private education and the government's support of it and that they support many other "conservative" issues. I wouldn't think a liberal thinker like Watermark would give them the time of day.

Yes, you can look at almost any reputable research and see that Oklahoma ranks near the bottom of the states (but not nearly THE bottom) when it comes to educational issues in everything from "chances for success" to teacher pay. I'm not proud of it. It is interesting that WM chose a conservative site against public education entirely to make his point.

Exactly....??Lil' Hitler?? (Quite a choice for a moniker I'd say). But still, this is exactly right. We need to look at why and perhaps do some theivery of ideas or programs.

OK dude, I just saw that you're Grind. That's what I get for checking in so fast. Very funny. I used your quote in a second sermon last Sunday night, by the way.

My state drives me nuts on educational issues because there is such blatant inequities in our system. We have some of the nations best High Schools and some of the worst. Our schools in the rural south east part of the state (appalachia) and in the urban parts are often terrible, lacking facilities, quality instructorss or motivated students/parents. Where in the rural west and suburbia the schools are good to outstanding. Unfortunately in Ohio a quality education seems to correlate to a parents income.

The point I was going to get to is that I don't think Okla. unique in this.....
I would not be afraid to bet that MOST, if not all, public schools would grade pretty damn close to Okla.....

I would not be afraid to bet that MOST, if not all, public schools would grade pretty damn close to Okla.....50 years ago there was no problem in teaching the kids to read, to do math, geography, etc. and learn about their government too....the kids even graduated with a set of ethics to be proud of also....
Todays kids couldn't begin to pass the tests normally given in schools 50 years ago....that may seem like hyperbole, but I think its fact....

This is exactly a fact. They couldn't. Thing is that kids 50 years ago couldn't do some of the things kids today can do...even bright kids of 50 years ago. It comes down to content and where emphasis is placed. Fifty years ago....and even further back, historical stories that taught about the constitution and bill of rights, moral stories (from the bible, gasp) and other educational things were used to teach reading as well as having the added benefit of teaching the content (history, government, morals) that the stories contained. Alas it ain't that way today.

The fact is that there is a disconnect between kids and adults now to the extent that it has never been at before. Kids simply do not have the respect for adults, be it teachers or parents or law enforcement or whatever, that they used to have and IMO should have. When you tell them that they have to learn something because the Board of Education under the oversight of the State Government set the standards their response is like, "So what. They're not going to tell me what is important for me to learn." It is going to be hard to get back, if we even can. Until we do and as long as kids are socially promoted so as not to "damage their self-esteem" our education system is going to be in the tank. We'll have a few that perform but most will be mired in mediocrity....or lower.

My kids respect me! Well....at least they did before I ate them.

All of this is just my opinion:

I think that lack of respect comes from our coddling of the kids. We removed the ability of educators to have disciplinary control over the kids. When I was a kid... you did NOT want to go see the principal and his paddle collection. You especially did not want a second trip to his office because that guaranteed the use of the paddle with da holes in it. Obviously we don't want discipline taken to the extreme, but a couple of whacks with a paddle will generally get a kids attention. Also... note to education administrations.... suspension from school... not a good idea. Kids tend to like the idea of a day off. Make them in school suspensions.

We also began this insane strategy of teaching to the lowest common denominator and then wondering at the same time why so many kids were suddenly being diagnosed with A.D.D. We do not all learn in the same manner, nor do we learn at the same speed. It is ignorant to try to teach to them in the same manner.

Also... side rant... enough of the kids sports where 'everyone is a winner'. What possible lesson can kids take from that? Oh yeah.... no matter what I do or how hard I try...'I win'???????? Losses TEACH us valuable lessons.
