i started in professional computing back in 63 and worked on a machine that had vacuum tubes and was bigger than two or more houses (AN/FSQ-Y7)
the bad old days of computing when all we had were card decks without edit capability - but, if you were lucky, you could get away with coding in machine code using the main console
Sounds like a radar system you operated on, such as the AN/TPS-75, or the AN/APQ-93, both of which I have been trained to operate on in the past.
