This is not an issue in practice since very few electors fail to vote for the candidate to which they are pledged. 30 states have laws binding electors although they are not enforceable but they can be punished.
However, in 2016 CO voted for Clinton and one of the electors voted for Kasich. That elector was removed and in 2020 the Supreme Court upheld the power of CO to remove the elector.
I don't think people are calling for the end of the electoral college because of faithless electors (since there are so few) but because the popular vote winner does not always win the electoral vote.
