We cannot aid Puerto Rico "forever"

I'm sure there is plenty of criticism to go around for the locals. This is like the criticism of Nagin - I never argued w/ any of that.

It's irrelevant to Trump's woeful leadership on this.
what "woeful leadership"? Once again you ether parrot fake news or just make shit up.
PR is getting a lot of aid.
There are promises of rebuilding the infrastructure ( not just repairing that Rube Goldberg mess).

Debt restructuring is a given, perhaps some forgiveness. If you read the link you were squawking about as "spam"
you'd see the military is making sure aid gets to the needed even where the locals are corrupt..

so where is this "woeful leadership" except in your head??

I don't think you understand what "leadership" is. Trump has never made PR a national priority. He spent most of the 1st week of crisis on the NFL. He went after the mayor of San Juan because he felt "hurt." He went on some weird ramble about how PR is in the ocean, and the ocean is big, so it was hard to help them. He talked last week like the relief efforts were successfully completed, and that it was basically a done deal & onto the next thing. And he reinforced that w/ this tweet implying that we've been their for ages & it's almost time to move on.

Meanwhile, people are starving and thirsty. Almost no one has power. There are reports of water-borne illnesses spreading. It is a humanitarian crisis.

It's actually sickening to hear you try to defend Trump & imply that he has shown ANY Presidential leadership on this.

I would bet you that he would keep everyone in Florida or Texas forever, if needed. Why doesn't he just keep his big mouth shut.

But, it's not needed there is it? People know they have to start cleaning up, day by day, rebuilding, city by city, local government taking over, planning, getting private businesses and industries involved, etc.

It's hard work, but it gets done in time.

Ever take a leaf blower and in the process of blowing leaves around, you blew apart a large ant mound? Even ants get it. Go out and look the next day and the surviving ants are already well on their way to constructing a new mound. There is a survival instinct in all of creation. Puerto Rico will be receiving help, but not a complete take-over of their lives. It will get done and the people themselves will be part of the process.

There are claims that despite delivery of hurricane relief by FEMA to town centers, local officials will distribute the relief to their political allies once federal officials leave the area.

“We’ll distribute the goods and supplies because we have to follow certain protocols, and that’s what local officials said they were doing, when they were waiting for federal officials to leave, and the allegations are they are handing relief out through back doors to their buddies,” FBI Special Agent Carlos Osorio stated.

As of now, the FBI is aware of six municipalities where such activity is allegedly happening. The federal prosecutor on the island, Rosa Emilia Rodriguez, announced that she is looking into these claims and is ready to criminally prosecute any official who withholds relief.

When asked about one Puerto Rican representative suspected of withholding relief, Rodriguez replied, “I do not think it would be proper to comment on that. We are not going to individualize it. But, anyone who is withholding supplies is in violation of federal and state law.”

Rodriguez continued, “Yesterday there was a government official from a municipality who gave everything he had to deliver very fast and it prevented us from charging him".

Even if a few in power did somehow unfairly enrich themselves, does that make it right for Trump to abandon the AMERICAN CITIZENS living in Puerto Rico?

two major hurricanes tore through the Caribbean in less than two weeks, some of the most idyllic — and tourism-dependent — destinations have been devastated.

In the hardest-hit places, including Dominica, Puerto Rico, Barbuda, St. Martin and the U.S. Virgin Islands, a slow and arduous recovery lies ahead.

Tourism is the most important economic driver and the main foreign exchange earner for the region, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization. Some places — including St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Sint Eustatius and Martinique — emerged mostly unscathed. In the Guadeloupe Islands, there was no damage to infrastructure

Yet the damage in other places was so extensive that despite the projected loss of crucial revenue, government officials this week were not focused on tourism; they were still struggling to ensure people’s health and safety.

American Airlines said that it would resume partial operations there on Friday to deliver supplies and bring more personnel to assist in restarting its operations at San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. The airline said its operations are still suspended to the Turks and Caicos Islands, St. Croix, St. Maarten and St. Thomas. Indeed, the U.S. Virgin Islands said visits should be postponed until further notice.

How badly the tourism industry will suffer is still being determined; in certain places the storm’s reverberations will likely be felt for years. On some islands, hotels have closed for repairs until next year and cruise lines are changing itineraries for at least the next few months.

And just HOW clueless is the GOP?

Rick Perry just called Puerto Rico a 'country'

Former Texas governor and current U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry referred to Puerto Rico as a "country" and was corrected by a Democrat congresswoman during a hearing.

Perry was addressing a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee Thursday when Rep. Kathy Castor of Florida asked him about plans for building a more distributed energy grid.

At a hearing on Capitol Hill Thursday, a Democratic congressman asked the Energy Department's watchdog to investigate Energy Secretary Rick Perry's use of chartered aircraft for travel. In light of the “extreme” budget cuts the department faces in a 2018 federal budget proposed by President Donald Trump, U.S. Representative Frank Pallone claimed that Perry’s trips on chartered planes need to be scrutinized.

In response to the question, Perry said, "Congresswoman Castro, you have just pointed out the real challenge this country faces in dealing with the territory and the citizens of Puerto Rico." He went on to say, "That is a country that already had its challenges before --."

Castro cut off Perry to correct him. "Well, it's America. They're American citizens, so it's not a country," she said.

The "57 states" thing is great - because it's the only slip-up connies ever post. It's actually a testament to how infrequently Obama misspoke (cue NOVA w/ "corpsemen.")

Just like when we start listing Trump's 100's of lies, and all they can counter with is "you can keep your health plan."

PR is a national priority in that it's getting all the help it can from Trump.
Congress just authorized another $40b or so - but they are still in cleanup mode -not rebuilding jut yet.

Where the military is needed for airdrops, it's being done. where the military is need to insure local corruption isn't diverging relief -it's being done.

If you don't understand the difference in logistics in helping Houston,or Florida, as opposed to PR being an island..it's why Trump tweeted such..

He talked about FIRST RESPONDERS need to move on,and the locals need to step up.
That in no way means the job of rebuilding is done.

If you can't figure out why there are water born illnesses, or see a need to blame Trump for those instead-
you are even more far gone then i thought

Trump could fund the cure for cancer and Thingy would complain about all the doctors who would be out of work.

:truestory:

I thought my threads were exclusive?

And of course - there is such a fine line between Trump treating PR like a foreign country who should lift themselves up by their own bootstraps, and curing cancer. Trump has been that magnificent.

I'm not going to keep going 'round & 'round w/ you on this. Trump doesn't care about PR - everything he has done & said backs that up. FEMA has their own job to do, and have done admirably considering. Trump has shown no leadership, and it's still not 100% clear that he understands that PR is part of America.

While CNN was all too happy to run with a narrative accusing the White House of racism for it's 'poor' response in Puerto Rico, a new report could prove the President was right all along, and it was local mayors hindering disaster recovery efforts on the island, not a lack of federal support.

The U.S. Attorney in San Juan is now opening an investigation into local mayors around Puerto Rico withholding supplies from residents and/or only delivering them to "constituents who voted for them."

While refusing to give specific names, the U.S. Attorney's office said that "the first is from the north and the other is from the center; and another is the metropolitan area."

The investigation was launched after Governor Ricardo Rosselló received multiple complaints that supplies delivered by FEMA to some mayors were not reaching citizens. "I want everyone to know that this will be investigated in a rigorous way," he told Wapa Radio.

He reiterated that "mayors and officials, if someone is committing a crime, receiving supplies and using them for their own people, that is a crime".
