What does “loyal opposition” mean?

Quite often I see JPP Democrats state that wish the GOP would go back to being the “loyal opposition “. I have always found it a curious designation and wondered what they meant by it

Specifically who are they to “oppose” and whom are they to be “loyal”

Please be specific.

Loyal to our country. Opposed to the ideas of the other side. Of course that implies that said other side is also loyal to our country which is debatable.

You didn’t answer the question. What does being the loyal opposition mean to you. I hear many lefties use this term when referencing the republicans

I never see republicans say this about democrats.

Loyal opposition is people who have their hearts in the right place. They disagree with us, but they still want what's best for the country. This is what Republicans were like during the Bush years.
Today's Republicans care more about "owning da libs" than doing what's best for the country.

The Trumps are not even loyal to the party, Trumpism is not Republicanism. This is a party of hero worship for a flawed and not too bright leader. One who is a crook and does not even know what the job is after 2 years of flailing at it. Trump locked in the LCD of that party and has the power to primary anyone who dares stand up to him.
Anyone who stands up to Trump insane talk and dirty deals will be eradicated by the far right Trumpies.
Politics has often been called the business of getting reelected. That is being fleshed out now. Republicans have taken a knee and will follow Trumps orders until he gets nailed. Then they will all pretend they were against him secretly.

Fortunately there are a few that are willing to stand up to his unconstitutional stealing of monies/usurping congre$$ for a wall for his namesake..

Will be interesting to see how it unfolds, if they finally see he is not infallible & start to take their party back..
 
Democrats used that term extensively back in The Obama's first two years, when they had all three branches of FedCo wrapped up and delightfully shoved all that shit down our throats. So what the term means is exactly that fantasy of theirs, they have all the power, all we can do is oppose without consequence to their agenda.

Was not 2 years, but Obama did get programs to help the people through. Trump got a tax cut to help the billionaires. And Obama was kind of busy fighting off a second great depression.

Of course, you would not know better. I understand how much you really know. But the Senate was down a man because of Franken's disputed election that took 8 months to settle. They had Lieberman, who was a Repub in Dems clothing. He even ran for being a VP in the Republican party. One long term Repub ran as a Dem when he saw he was going to lose, He sided with the Repubs. The senate was essentially a dead heat on policy. Bernie and king are Independents.
