Constitution

The fundamental law, written or unwritten, that establishes the character of a government by defining the basic principles to which a society must conform; by describing the organization of the government and regulation, distribution, and limitations on the functions of different government departments; and by prescribing the extent and manner of the exercise of its sovereign powers.

A legislative charter by which a government or group derives its authority to act.

The concept of a constitution dates to the city-states of ancient Greece. The philosopher Aristotle (384–322 b.c.), in his work Politics, analyzed over 150 Greek constitutions.

He described a constitution as creating the frame upon which the government and laws of a society are built:

A constitution may be defined as an organization of offices in a state, by which the method of their distribution is fixed, the sovereign authority is determined, and the nature of the end to be pursued by the association and all its members is prescribed.

Laws, as distinct from the frame of the constitution, are the rules by which the magistrates should exercise their powers, and should watch and check transgressors.

In modern Europe, written constitutions came into greater use during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Constitutions such as that of the United States, created in 1787, were influenced by the ancient Greek models.

During the twentieth century, an increasing number of countries around the world concluded that constitutions are a necessary part of democratic or republican government. Many thus adopted their own constitutions.

It's rather like the bible, meaningless other than as a blunt intrument with which to bludgeon ideological opponents.

Your posts are always meaningless. Your brain must have been hit with a blunt instrument during birth. You're a good case for having abortions.

It is Trump's toilet paper.

What Exactly Is The U.S. Constitution?

The Constitution is one of the most unique attempts by man in his attempt to govern civilization. It is a limit on the Government to ensure life, liberty and prosperity. It is the single reason the United States is the greatest beacon of freedom in the world.

What exactly is progressive liberalism?

The antithesis to the Constitution and all that it means.

That is the difference I did go to school and we had to take political science. http://www.afn.org/~govern/Manual.html You can be snotty but you are still wrong.

for you and kudzu, your bullshit argument about how the constitution lays down regulations upon society is whats wrong. the ONLY thing the US Constitution does is create the federal government and prescribes them limited duties and powers. It says absolutely nothing about how the people are supposed to be regulated.

Actually lays out a framework for how the people can control the government. It did not work out that way. Framework =blueprint. I can give you an article, book or paper that calls the constitution a blueprint all day if you wish. You change you mind about blueprint? good, perhaps you can learn.

No.. NOT "regulations".... principles that we agree upon that are the foundation of governance.

You might want to read Jefferson's letters.. You are really ignorant about the high minded ideals and thought that went into the Constitution.

Is the Constitution intended to empower the Federal Government, or is it an effort to limit its powers?

Jesus, you are so combative you can't think. Principles.. the Constitution enumerates the principles on which they founded the union.. Principles we agree upon.

there is nothing in the constitution that tells the people what principles they are to live by. I'm well versed in the constitution, the framers debates, the commentaries. it's how I know that the 2nd Amendment is supposed to prevent the federal government from having anything to do with our arms. the fact that you approve that they do tells me you don't care about the constitution.

I agree, we should have an unfettered righty to blunderbusses and muskets.

Is the Constitution intended to empower the Federal Government, or is it an effort to limit its powers?

It does both. It creates the structure of government, grants the federal government delegated (and implied) powers, and limits the power of the federal government and the states.

There is nothing in the Constitution about "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" and these are not legally enforceable rights.

Jefferson's letters are interesting, but he had nothing to do with the writing of the Constitution.
