At what point does the left stop calling it a hand up and start calling it a hand out?

I happened to ride by my church on Monday morning. We have a pantry, etc. that provides food, clothing, and other miscellaneous items to those in need. 2 hours prior to it opening, there were several people, most of whom were significantly younger than me, already lined up waiting to go in. I mentioned that to a friend of mine that is retired and works at the church part time doing basic maintenance. He said that is a weekly routine for some and it's the same people every week.

I'm not against the church helping people truly in need. However, at what point do they start helping themselves.

By 'socialism' most Americans seem to mean normal capitalism, which admits a duty to keep people alive, stuff like that, rather than in some sort of (purely imaginary) battle to the death, the sort of crap trumpers see in their cups.

Now you sound like the Democrats who call all government spending "investment." I'm not sure paying farmers higher prices for their crops is investment.

If we have to subsidize farmers we are admitting free market capitalism does not work.

A hand up is temporary and does not require billions in continued subsidies annually; especially for farm programs to pay for not growing crops.
