Really all that matters in todays modern campaign's for president is that you are more able to capture the image of being more patirotic than the other guy.

To be fair, he did not suggest that Islam as a whole was radical. He simply stated that a radical religious movement threatened to destroy us. Which is true. A radical sect of Islam has done just that. It is a small minority of Islam as a whole, but it does exist. As do radicals within Christianity and Judaism.
