While I agree that such ideas float around companies for years, the cynic in me knows "It's all about the money". Ergo, like our own government, companies tend to look no further than next year, not five years ahead, much less decades. I wish they would but they don't.
That said, I think you are partially correct about live remakes. The difference being that, instead of planning a series of live remakes, they simply looked at the profit margins of remaking the same stories with live actors then chose from there.
I'm surprised you have any memory left!!!!!![]()
There are ten additional remakes on Disney's schedule, three of them already have release dates. So this is very definitely a strategic plan.
Here is my take. As a STRATEGIC thinker. Disney made a decision several years ago to do live remakes. I'm sure that as part of that strategic plan, there were discussions about making characters more diverse. That would reflect a strategic vision for the company.
What Disney could not have foreseen at that time, or even at the time the movie began production, is that a bunch of narrow minded hateful idiots would pick that exact moment in time to have a pissing contest with Disney, and that 'woke' would suddenly have replaced intelligence or critical thinking on the right. A perfect storm of hatred and stupidity. That said, it would not make sense to suddenly veer from that strategic vision because there might be a short term hit to some movie.
I suspect also that my rather simplistic strategic speculation would be about three layers deeper than they are capable of thinking.

IMO this is a very good analysis about what went on with the movie's casting and slight changes from the original. It wasn't some diabolical, nefarious plot by the Global Woke & Warming Kabal to force white people to accept not-white people.
It's just a fucking movie about a made-up species of mythical creatures.![]()
Black Snow White?
Snow Black?
Will they keep the words "Seven Dwarfs" in the title?
Or will they be forced to change it to the "Seven Little People"?
Maybe the new title will be changed to....
"Snow of Undetermined Color and the Seven Height Challenged Individuals"
Let the self-righteous conniptions begin!
In the 50's children of color watched movies and TV and saw no characters that looked like them, except stereotypes like song of the south or Ramar of the Jungle and amos and andy or The Beulah Show
Let the self-righteous conniptions begin!
Entertainment, esp. TV, was so warped back then. Everyone was white, exc. for the caricatured exceptions you pointed out. Women were perky and subservient at the same time, and never smarter than the male characters, esp. if they were little girls. A show might have an alcoholic person ("drunk") but they were also comedic caricatures. All the heroes were white guys. "Indians" were portrayed by non-native actors and grunted a lot and talked like two-year-olds -- when they weren't busy wiping out the noble Euro pioneers and settlers and brave soldiers.
Women in old Westerns were either saloon tarts or brave-yet-petrified-about-everything pioneer farm/ranch women. Especially if they were widowed because their brave Euro husband was killed repelling the hostile savages.
Jewish characters always talked with a Yiddish accent and reeked of matzo ball soup.
Italian characters had NYC accents or exaggerated just-off-the-boat accents, and were always agitated. German characters were Nazis. There were no gay characters, except in sly ways... like Marvin the Martian.
Asians were either quiet servants, evil plotters, or wiped out by brave American victors in WWII movies.
Everyone knew their place and life was good.

This Little Mermaid black actor thing is breaking Nomad.
I looked at our theater listings this afternoon. Although I'm not a Disney fan and did not see the original, I just might go see it this week. It's been so long since I've had movie popcorn! And there is nothing wrong with a little escapism. I'll imagine that my youngest g-daughter is watching with me.

It is often a sign of a lack of wisdom and insight on the part of some people, when they profess to know for certain, things they have no way of knowing for certain.
While it's entirely possible you could be right, given the definitive nature of your statement which has no way of being proven by you, you lack the standing to have made it in the way you did. As if you were a party to it or observed it firsthand.
Everything I've opined on this subject has been presented as an opinion based on my observations. Mainly of the recent cancel culture phenomenon, where corporations have publicly bowed to woke pressure to change the names of long established products. My expressed opinions were formed under the assumption that Disney is likely no different from companies like PepsiCo and Mars Inc, owners of the former brands Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben's respectively, which are now called Pearl Milling Company and Ben's Original after woke pressure forced the parent companies to change the original names.
I still believe that if nothing else, in Disney's making the decision to "go black", the pressure to appease woke public opinion was at least a significant factor.
It just seems to be the way things go nowadays.

Maybe we could help them with the definition of 'strategic'.
I can't imagine having these short sighted idiots on the board.
Practically all I watch anymore are those very same old shows you're talking about.
MeTV, GetTV, Grit, AntennaTV, etc, etc.
I can tell you that while some of what you're whining about might have some merit to a degree, it wasn't all the way you make it out to be.
There were quite a few tough, savvy women characters in TV shows and movies and fairly often.
Not many blacks, true. But given what a small percentage of the population they've traditionally constituted, you can't really blame the TV networks back then. They were a nascent industry beholden to the commercial product manufacturers who paid the bills and wanted their ads on shows that targeted those who constituted the largest percentage of viewers and had the most money to spend.
As much as you'd love to blame it on the evil racism of the evil white male TV execs, reality does not bear that out.
Plus, your woke narrative can just as easily be described as antisemitism, since most of the TV and movie industry was controlled by Jews.
So are you accusing Jews of being racist and misogynist?![]()
Are you saying they purposely stereotyped their own fellow Jews?![]()
Anyway, given how OVER represented blacks have become in the media today, I'd say they no longer have anything to complain and cry victim about.
You can stay stuck in the past or move forward.
No, what's IRKING (far from breaking) me, is your intellectual dishonesty about everything related to this topic.
Something I've seen before amongst the woke white crowd.
So shackled is your sense of superiority to how relentlessly you "defend" those helpless, downtrodden black people who just can't get a fair shake without mighty whities like YOU on their side.
Frankly, sir, I find your bitter opinions absurd. You don't find what I suggested absurd?...
You're still at it, bunky?
I mean, you pull all this supposition and conjecture BS out of your posterior as if it's fact. Thing is, you know NOTHING about the history of the brand logos for Aunt Jemima (or Uncle Ben). The Aunt Jemima logo was "tweaked" in the last 50 years to make it less offensive to the black population....Hell, 80 years before that it had changed from it's serious plantation born imagery. Look it up and get back to us when you're educated enough to stop labeling everything you don't like as "woke".

Why do you support pushing your opinions upon others?
