The North did not try to tell the South to end slavery until the South attacked the North.
Slavery was hurting the South more than the North was. Slavery was crippling the Southern economy, which could not compete with the North. Most of the labor in the South was free. Bought and paid for. The few jobs had very low wages. There was way less of a consumer economy in the South than there was in the North. New immigrants coming in from Europe settled mostly in the North because that's where the jobs were. The only people in the South that were doing well were mostly just the slave owners. The South was falling behind the North. Congress reflected that. As the Northern economy grew more powerful than the South, so did the free population and with it, more representation in Congress and bigger numbers to elect the executive branch. This was not the fault of the North. The South brought this situation on themselves with slavery because it muted their economy and thus their growth.
The South is out of place to blame the North for any of this. The South caused their own problems. The great Southern grudge against the North is completely misplaced. They should be mad at themselves and admit to mistakes. Since this mistake was never admitted, they didn't learn from it. We are still living with the resulting leftover hatred and racism. Slaves and blacks did not cause the problems of the South. But they have been held responsible for it for 135 years. What a lousy thing to inherit. Times up. Time to move on.
