What the? Could global warming actually be BAD for polar bears?

I know, I know - this is going to come as a shock, especially since we were recently told by one of our best & brightest posters that warming was actually GOOD for polar bears, but as it turns out, they inexplicably don't react well to sudden, dramatic losses of habitat:

They're estimating that up to 2/3 of the population will be gone by 2050. I just don't see how this could happen...

I read this in the Times over the weekend, and I thought of him too. I would have laughed, but it's not really funny you know?

{puts on Dano hat}

What animal wouldn't want warmer climates? There are more berries to eat and an abundance of animals to hunt - a lot more than would have been there if global warming hadn't helped them out. You always look at the negative Lorax. What about the good that Global warming accomplishes. People in the Tundra of Russia have record high summers........one day even got up to 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

Further more even if they are dying off.......who really needs polar bears anyway? Are you effected by the polar bears? I'm certainly not. As a matter of fact I'll sleep sounder knowing that there are less of them. Afterall, they are dangerous.

So in closing, call your rep to abolish public schools.

That's as good a laugh as I've had on a Monday morning in ages. Scary, though, too. You only left out the guy he knew at McDonald's who took a trip to Alaska & saw a few polar bears & plenty of ice for them to live on...

I suspect he'll reiterate that there are two out of five that are hurting, but the other three are growing or some such....

I can't remember the full argument or I'd play Devil's Advocate for this thread.

I don't care enough about Global Warming to educate myself on both sides of the argument. I think we should clean up our act for reasons I believe are better than just Global Warming.

You're not alone. There are loads of good reasons to accelerate the development of alternative/renewable/domestic sources of energy...

That's how I feel about it.

And the cons had more representation on the other 2 boards, but I did not notice damo playing devils advocate for libs over there....

Conservatives on both FP & JPP have been, in general, poorly represented. There are no William F. Buckley's in this crowd....
