what was the best time in American history?

Are you really referring to Bush II who was reading a book about a goat at the time?

If his response to 9/11 was his finest hour, then his presidency REALLY sucked the big lemon.

I personally thought his call for immigration reform was one of his few shining moments.

Is that the famous upside down book?

Don't forget Dubya's promise not to play golf either. Then started playing a month later?

That goat thing really speaks to Bush's competence as a leader (which, after all, was one of his 2 campaign points - cutting taxes, and being a leaderrrrrr).

Would Clinton have sat there that long? Reagan? Even Bush's father?

No way. Bush was more concerned about "not panicking the kids," than about America being under attack.

Since you are now a Republican you can't say things like this anymore.

No he would have just bombed and bombed and bombed Afghanistan until we were out of bombs. Or he would have done the whole surge thing, which we can see how well that works today.

Also, we are not "dependent" on the ME for oil. Over 85% comes from Mexico and Canada.

In 2012, 60% of foreign oil imports came from OPEC and Persian gulf countries. OPEC countries 4.256 million bpd (40%) and Persian Gulf countries 2.151 million bpd (20%).

I would have yelled out a duck and cover drill and gone sprinting out if the classroom yelling "chaaaaarge!!" if I had the foresight to bring along a bugler, I would have had him sound the command.

Excuse me class I have some work to go do would you please finish reading the book without me.

Get up smiling and say good bye.

what he did was sit there and look like he had no idea what he should do.

Bush told everybody to go shopping right after 911 and told them, don't worry, we'll take care of it. "We'll" certainly took care of it.

This isn't going to sit well with the republicans but the longer I stick around, the more I get the impression that 911 was an inside job.

Conspiracy theory of the day.

That's because he had his mind on the frat house party he planned on attending Friday night.

That's where you came in.

It's all about the children.

BTW, what did FDR do in the first hour after he was told about Pearl Harbor?

What was that?

I know he moved the pacific fleet from San Diego to Pearl Harbor before Pearl Harbor. He also activated the draft after he made a campaign pledge to keep America out of the war in Europe.

Now, don't get me wrong, Bush is a complete moron. But that particular moment wasn't an example of it. I would probably have responded with the above scenario, but at the moment, the entire homeland defense structure was mobilizing an automated response. NORAD and the FAA were shutting down the airspace and launching fighters. Units throughout the military were recalling personnel. For the next few hours there wasn't a lot of input he needed to give.

Oh God, don't start her off. This will turn into yet another 9/11 conspiracy thread.

No, wrong again. It seems that all Americans were fed the appropriate position to take on Bush's dallying around while the nation was clearly being attacked. He should have jumped to his feet, run out of that place, and got himself fully informed on the situation so he could act as a president.

Anything else is nothing but excuses for the largest lack of decisiveness ever displayed by a president in your country's history. It can't ever be covered up but it's obvious that the pap you people were fed has stuck.

This became a clear indication of the lack of character of the man. That should have also made it clear that he was nothing but a figurehead who was directed to give the speeches as he was directed and as they were written for him.

Contrast Obama now!

It all depends on how high you rank "intellectual curiosity" as what you want in a leader.

For me, it's up there. And when the CIC hears that "America is under attack", and that is all that he knows, I'd prefer to see him politely excuse himself to get a little more info.

I thought we were merely being terrorized rather than attacked. That's the whole basis why this was a law enforcement matter rather than a military one, right?

I personally consider it more along those lines. But, at the time, all Bush knew was that we were under attack.

Must be why Obama played Spades, while Osama was being killed.
